Once per year, yep.
2002-06-16 14:47:36
My first video "premiered" on 20 May 2001.
My second video will premiere on 17 June 2002.
My third video had better damned well premiere before 31 December 2002. Dammit. =)

Video! Video! Video! Video!

I made me a gawl-darned an-ee-may mew-zic vi-dee-oh!
A real one, this time. A song with actual lyrics. Longer than 4 minutes. Did lots of editing. Lots of pieces of video, and I worked hard to hit the beats and "moments" I really wanted.
So I'm sitting in front of my computer Saturday morning, looking at my CD library database (yes, I'm a geek) and scrolling through my Ogg/MP3 collection trying to "get inspired." I felt obligated by my deliberate journal posting about working on a video this weekend, so I tried.
It took me almost four hours to find The Song. The choice of song meant that I had to scrap the Tenchi OAV rip I had on the hard drive to make room for a Manatsu no Eve rip. That's how strongly the idea grabbed me. I heard the song, thought, "Nah, that won't work for the Tenchi OAV either," heard a particular lyric and chord and then thought, "Oh MAN! It's perfect! Mayuka kissing Tenchi's chest! I MUST MAKE THIS VIDEO!"
A little more than 24 hours later, I have a finished MPEG file on my hard drive. I'll be transporting it to work in the morning for posting to my server, immediately after which I'll make the official posting here.
"A video made in such a short timeframe," I can hear you saying, "probably isn't very good." I beg to differ. Perhaps it's not gold-standard, but I'm really quite proud of it. The bits that I wanted to prove to myself that I could do, I did. Watching it as clinically as I can, I feel that it's a worthy video overall with only a few soft or odd moments. I'm looking forward to constructive criticism. How could I have avoided some of those awkward bits? I don't know, and I'm hoping that creators brighter and more experienced than myself can teach me.
Ah, I do feel good today. And I promise here and now that it won't be ANOTHER year before my next video comes out. (Am I averaging more or less than one per year? I'll have to check the release date on Ecstasy Of Jurai.)

Light. Tunnel. Oncoming Train?

Well, I got some love from BulkRegister.com. Sorta.
I can go to another of their "resellers" (probably for a nominal setup fee, again) and make my domain changes then. Woo freakin' hoo. First thing Monday I'll be on the phone seeing how quickly I can get it going. I want to be on the new server NOW.
TGIF, friends. I WILL spend some of this weekend doing video stuff. I'm slicing up bits and pieces of the first Tenchi OAVs with an eye towards a kind of half-formed idea of a project that I'm noodling around on.
Don't hold your breath, mind you, but it'll give me something meaningful to do with my weekend. I could use some meaning right about now.

The arms race between allergy meds and the garbage in the air
2002-06-13 14:33:54
Ye gods. I finally broke down and asked the doc for an Allegra prescription because the antihistamines always put me into a near-coma at work. For the first couple of months, it worked great and I was a happy little grey duck.
Now, apparently, the trees and grasses in the fine City of Roses have conspired to quadruple their output, once again reducing me to a sneezing miserable mess. Some days you just can't win.
The next person to gush about how the weather is "finally beautiful again" is getting thumped. If you want all-day sunshine and 80+ temperatures, move back to California ya bastards.

Back again, tail between the legs; a neat trick for a duck

So at the moment, greyduck.net is seriously fucked up.
Here's the short version: I signed up in January with Invite.net. I didn't know this at the time, but they used BulkRegister.com as the domain registrar. This week BizLand.com took over all of Invite.net's business. BizLand doesn't support the features that enticed me to Invite in the first place. BizLand won't help me transfer my domain because they're not the registrar. Invite can't help me because they don't exist any more. BulkRegister.com won't help me because I'm supposed to go through my reseller for that sort of thing. That would be the non-existent Invite, of course. Oh, I could pay BulkRegister a one-time $80 fee to "join" them, after which I could do anything I wanted to my domain.
I don't have $80. If I had $80, I'm not sure I'd give it to them just for the luxury of doing something I SHOULD ALREADY BE ABLE TO DO THROUGH THE COMPANY I PAID GOOD MONEY FOR THE ABILITY TO DO THIS THROUGH TO.
*sigh* So I'm back to using AMVs.org for my journal needs. Sorry, folks.
