JOURNAL: GreyDuck (Karel Kerezman)

  • Still untitled, but halfway done anyway. 2002-07-21 23:49:53 I figure I can whip up a title card and tack it on the end once I'm done with it and have some freaking idea what it's going to be called.

So much for getting that brilliant idea, cleverly summed up in a title and executed with style and flair. =) This video's a slog, pure and simple, through several hours of source material looking for a few good sequences.

What am I learning so far? I discovered today that with some judicious selection you can streamline a more complex action sequence down to something that'll fit in 20 seconds of music without losing too much of the strength of the original sequence. That moment of realization was surprisingly profound for me. "A-ha! I don't need the bit where they smash through the window together, I can just cut straight from the first drop out of the office window right to the bungee sequence and it works!"

Today was spent putting together a 45-second version of Iria's entry into the Taddan Tippedai offices, her confrontation with Puntabai and her escape with the AI through a transit gate. I'm now just shy of 2 minutes into a 3:47 video. I have until next weekend to finish.
  • Progress Report - Iria/Kin Selim video as yet untitled 2002-07-15 14:36:18 So I ripped both Iria and Armitage Dual-Matrix on Friday night, then did the requisite DVD2AVI/AviSynth work so I could pull them up in VirtualDub.

After half an hour of looking at each one, I scrapped the Armitage rip. While the movie does have some neat action, from an editing standpoing Dual-Matrix is utter crap. It's blurry, blocky, blotchy and just generally not what I'd want to base my next video upon. Feh.

So I went back to Iria, which responds much much better to the AviSynth process than it ever did to being transcoded to AVI in the "old" method. Once again, thanks to ErMaC for that guide!

As of this writing I'm about 25 seconds into the opening sequence with a lot more VirtualDub work ahead of me. I'm snipping elements of 15, 30 and 60 frames long which I then crop down a few frames as necessary to fit the beats. This video is probably going to be a pure exercise in on-the-beats editing. (All part of the learning experience, baby!)

Oh, and "Mayuka" got an opinion! Thank you, ladydx! =)
  • Now decided, time to work 2002-07-12 13:30:56 The music: Something almost nobody has ever heard. It's basically some dance trackage from one of the guys I work with... yes, I'm taking another stab at an "instrumental" video.

The footage: I've ruled out the Tenchi OAVs. I mean, hell, I've done two Tenchi videos out of two. It's time for a change. I'm either going to use Armitage Dual-Matrix (plot full of holes, but some neat visuals if you don't mind the occasional too-computery look and annoying jaggies on facial shadows) or Iria, an anime I attempted to use before but gave up on the project because I didn't know what I really wanted to do with it. I'd use Akira but I can't see how I'd fit it to the music.

The timeline: I have to have something done by month's end so I can ship a bunch of CD-ROMs to my sister for her wedding.
  • No journal activity, but some ideas 2002-06-24 18:34:14 Okay, so this weekend was NOT spent making videos. I have an excuse (and we all know what THOSE are like, don't we?) in that there was a huge email-related debacle at work Sunday morning and I had to spend most of the day fixing it and cleaning up afterward.

You'll notice how that explanation conveniently avoids discussing how I wasted my day Saturday? Yeah, I thought you might. Sharp eyes you've got there.

I do have a couple of semi-cool ideas, though, for videos I'd like to attempt. Note "attempt" and not necessarily "complete." I want to see if I can put together a few short, 30-60 second vignettes to practice doing tighter, faster edits.

Think of it as having assigned myself homework to become a better AMV creator.
  • We now return you to your regularly scheduled silliness 2002-06-23 20:52:45 I'm back where I belong: http://greyduck.net

But of course, now that I'm actually *gasp* making videos, I'll be using this journal again. To talk about *gasp* making videos.

    Thank you. =)
