Validation and art
2001-10-16 15:52:01
Reading journal entries again, came across TheGline's bit about the movie Pollock. Something in that entry struck a chord in my psyche, something about how our artistic expressions are a form of self-validation. "I did this with my own mind and my own hands. I exist, I have purpose and meaning."
I've tried writing, I'm dabbling in AMV creation, I tried my hand at digital art. I'm not terribly good at any of these endeavours, mind you, but I'm compelled to _try_ no matter what. At least until I get disgusted with my lack of quality and shelve the whole thing for a few months. I lack discipline as well as talent and perspective. I suspect that I could get talented if I could maintain discipline.
JMS, creator of Babylon 5, posted a statement to one of the newsgroups years ago that also resonates deep within my soul. I can't find the quote right off-hand, but it essentially stated that there are two kinds of artists: those who write/paint/etc because they think it's fun/cool/way-to-get-laid/etc, and those who create because they cannot do otherwise. He spoke of being driven to put words to paper, unable to do or think about anything else. Maybe that's pure artistry, and anyone who doesn't have that irresistable impetus will never measure up to those who do.
Beats me, I'm no expert on anything. I just dabble.

It wasn't my fault, officer

Well, okay. I was GOING to do work on my Iria video, but circumstances beyond my control forced me to spend 6 solid hours playing D2X on the house LAN. You see, my wife watches rugrats during the week for Amy and Michael, our good friends. Michael is without wheels right now due to getting T-boned on the way to a hunting trip last weekend. So he bussed over to our place to pick up Baby Hannah, and planned to wait for Amy to come pick him up. Well, with his computer at our place anyway, he decided to kill time by killing demons. Can't argue with that logic.
But see, once one person is playing D2, the rest of us have to jump in as well. And eventually Amy showed up, and she wanted some of the action as well. Long story short, the four of us ganged up on Diablo hisself and pounded him into oblivion. (Well, okay, so we racked up three or four deaths apiece in the process. Your point?) And riding the adrenaline high from that experience caused us to finish off the first two quests in Act V as well. At about 2:00am we finally got tired enough to wrap it up.
Waste of time? Yes. Fun, though.

Yep, it's true, I've done almost nothing of significance for the last two days. Mind you, I have spent some time trying to make an old BT848 TV card work for doing vidcaps (too old, too slow, no go) and I've been doing administrivia at the office. (Nothing like handwritten purchase orders to give you a really good hand cramp.) Oh yes, and lots of D2:LOD. Can't forget the gaming, baby.
I think I'll try to dump in some more bits to my Iria video this evening. Any progress, no matter how small, means I can sleep at night with a clear conscience.
Oh, and the rest of my household has been bitten by the Harry Potter bug. Narf. I'm going to avoid reading those books as long as possible.

Happy Birthday to EK!
I started a new Javazon in D2X, she's now a level 18. Oh, her name is Shampoo. (What ELSE would I name an Amazon? Oh yeah, I have a Bowazon named LingLing.)
Our "engineering" department is now down to 4 people... two broadcast engineers, a remotes guy and Me. Oh boy, this is gonna be fun.
I used to practically live in the chat room for KNRK, one of our stations. This is the second time in three years that I've been asked to build a chat room, and the second time in three years that the station lost complete interest in the chat room after the first three weeks of its operation. Grr. I barely go in there anymore, it's too bittersweet and I'm too busy.
No, I haven't touched my video in a couple of days. I'll get to it, just maybe not today. Probably tomorrow, though. The fire is still there, I simply don't want to burn out.
I'm sleepy. It probably doesn't help that I had a mug of cocoa for breakfast... which is more than I usually put in my body in the morning. Ugh.

Just another progress report
2001-10-07 14:32:30
It looks as though I'm going to have to go back through my source material with VirtualDub and pull out more bits. Now that I'm actually assembling in Premiere I've discovered that I don't have the right KINDS of bits that I need for some of the lyrical content I'm up against.
Note to self, next time do some planning sheets based on actually listening to the song in question.
Hmm, inspiration strikes for a Forum question.
Anyway, I'm putting sequences into certain key spots in the song, then I'll "fill" with the other various action bits I've got clipped. And THEN I'll see if I can actually make it look good from start to finish. This is going to be kind of an organic project... start from "there" and "there" and then grow to fill the available space. It'll probably end up sucking, but I think I'm allowed that given that this is only my second project.
(Let's hear it for stratospheric standards, eh?)
