Rocky's Boots are NOT made for walkin'.
2001-11-12 14:45:07
Full marks to dokidoki for correctly identifying Rocky's Boots. Mind you, it makes one dimly aware of the awesome power these forums possess to make people run strange and obscure Google searches...
Yes, I was in 5th and 6th grades in the tiny hamlet of Bridgeport, WA. The classroom had an Apple //e. I spent hours playing Rocky's Boots.
But that's not the sick part... no, about a year ago I actually hunted down some Apple // emulator code and the Rocky's Boots disk images. Yep, nostalgia reared its ugly muzzle and I wasted a couple of hours watching logic circuits light up and that adorable boot kick-kick-kick.
I think maybe I need to chase ME out of the house a bit more often.

I feel all MSTie-eyed
2001-11-12 14:04:46
Perusing journals again for inspiration. I should be ashamed of myself. (Shouldn't we all?)
I wonder, knghtbrd, how much MST one must absorb before random MST quotes pop into your head at (in)opportune moments. Because reading your MSTie moment in the journal caused an immediate reaction in my skull:
SLEEEEEEEP!
And I won't even go into the fact that "Down, down, down" is a running joke in my household and has been for several months now. (Go on, name that MST. Here's your hint: John Agar. Here's another hint: "load.")
What's really scary is my son quoting a joke from a different MST during the opening credits of the... er... one mentioned above. "All and, all the time." I stared at him for a moment, and he explained, "Yeah, that's the joke they make at the beginning of 'Space Children.' Oh.
Clever boy, but I think I need to chase him out of the house more often.
("and she wasn't chosen for the sacrifice because...?")

Catching up is hard to do
2001-11-11 13:03:59
You know, hardly a month goes by now when I don't get horribly ill. Dunno why. Here it is, Sunday morning and I'm just now feeling more or less human again.
No, I won't go into details. They're not pretty, the details.
On compunostalgia: Two games stand out when I think about my Apple //e days, Rocky's Boots and Bolo. I'd be amazed if anyone has ever heard of either of them. (No, this is NOT the near-famous Mac tank game Bolo. This is older, much more primitive and difficult.)
No, I'm not doing any video work this weekend. It's Sunday morning and it's all I can do to pay attention to non-moving images on my computer. Somehow I think I'd regret going anywhere near my Iria video today. Mind you, I do feel much better about the video itself since last weekend when I did some very substantial work on it. I also realized last night, thinking about it, that a lot of the material I snipped for inclusion wasn't really the kind of material I needed. Live and learn, I guess. It's only my second video, so there are bound to be harsh lessons.
Good thing I still have all six episodes as gigantic AVI files to dump into VirtualDub for snippage, huh? =)
Well, back to chat for a little while (#LuvShack on EFnet IRC, if you must know) and then I think I'll play some D2X and eat breakfast and such. (My Golemancer finally beat Baal! It's my first full-game victory in Diablo II! Hot damn! Now to whup Baal with my Barbarian...)
It's amazing I get any creative work done when you think about how much gaming I do.

Saturday was nice
2001-11-05 22:28:06
Oh my yes... the house to myself for almost 12 solid hours. I ate pizza. I played games. I watched movies. I even, yes, WORKED ON MY VIDEO! I probably only have about 1/5 of the song "covered" with video footage, but what I have is EXACTLY where I want it.
I feel much better now. I'll feel even better if I can do this on a semi-regular basis... even putting in an hour every weekend would be progress, and I think I'm ready to make that commitment now.

Success in one endeavour, at least
2001-11-02 14:08:11
I finally nailed down two major problems I've been having with my Linux workstation at the office.
One, I couldn't send email from Evolution. Turns out not to have been Evo's fault, it was instead gensig's fault... it had lunched, which left my .signature file/pipe in a really weird state. OTOH I now have a newer version of Evo, I have Red Carpet installed (thank you Ximian for finally supporting Mandrake 8!) and some of the older gtkhtml cruft is gone. So it worked out good in the end.
Two, I keep messing about with the upcoming Enlightenment 17 material. Recently I ended up in a state where imlib2-based image viewers were totally ugly... big blotches in all imagery. Turns out to (apparently) have been related to the fact that the Mandrake cooker now provides redundant PNG libraries. Great. If you want to play with E-17 stuff like imlib2, build from source tarballs always. Always, I say.
I've been at the office since 6:20am PST because the WAN feed went down and I was called in to look at it and say, "Yep, it's down. Hope they get it fixed soon." And I've got a project I have to do after-hours tonight, so it's gonna be one long-assed day. Good thing I have massive bandwidth, lots of CPU power, some good games and a huge music library to keep me going.
