  • Geeking around for fun and profit 2001-12-05 13:45:02 Well, for fun anyway.

Those of you so inclined, and who are kind of tired of dealing with the eccentricities of various Linux distros, should check out http://www.linuxfromscratch.org and learn how to truly roll your own Linux rig.

Also, I managed to make EFM lock-and-load under Mandrake 8.0, yay! (Yes, I know, I know, EFM is a dead project. Until E-17 has something a little more than some menus and a pretty wallpaper to work with, I'll stick with my lovely EFM.) It has to do with the fact that fam is actually at version 2.6.6 instead of 2.6.4 like all the package maintainers seem to have thought until yesterday.

Maybe I'll toss a screenshot onto deviantart at some point when I'm more-or-less happy with my progress. If you're really bored and can spare the time and bandwidth, my dev-art site is http://greyduck.deviantart.com.

Like that's useful information or something. =)
  • Happy Goth Fun Time 2001-12-03 14:54:15 MCWagner: Thank you for one of the more succinct descriptions of what's so damned funny about 99% of the "goth scene." Cloud of ridicule indeed!

    Bwahahahaha!

My coworker and I used to get into these riffs where we'd deepen our voices and say words like "ennui" and "angst" in resounding tones. We pronounced it "aaaah-gnst." Drawing out the vowel sounds was part of the fun, you see. Now that I think about it, this does fall solidly into "hadda be there" territory. Hmm.

Just because I dress mostly in black does not put me in the same class as the angst-y poseurs you see roaming the streets downtown, thank you muchly. I'm much, much too cheery. That, and I don't idolize vampires. Well, I could go on and on, actually, but I'll spare the gentle journal reader...
  • Monday Morning 2001-12-03 14:47:57 What did I do with my weekend? Not too much, really. Dishes, cooked dinner, took care of the kids... discovered the joys of Set Items in D2X... played lots of D2X... played some Age2:TC... oh, and listened to a couple of new CDs.

The Gorillaz album is kind of strange, but it's actually pretty fluffy overall. There are really only about 4 or 5 standout tracks, and that's out of 14. I like Tomorrow Comes Today and 19-2000 best at the moment.

And then there's the new Mint Royale. Most of it is certainly background music, but it's really good background music. The first couple of tracks really impressed me, and I remember never being annoyed by any of the subsequent selections. (I was levelling my Bowazan pretty aggressively during that hour, so I wasn't paying as much attention to the music as I probably should have.)

We're shipping off the rugrats and papa-in-law on the 18th, and they don't come back until the 8th of January. Woo!
  • Miscellaneous Talkback 2001-11-30 16:36:52 Music? Genesis, Midnight Oil, VAST, dada... some new stuff I'm evaluating like Gorillaz, the new Daft Punk, Stabbing Westward, Space Brothers... old stuff I listen to on occasion like Tull, Zep, Floyd, Rush, Yes, 'cheMode, Pet Shop Boys. And other random material.

Grammar? I tend to get fairly anal about spelling and grammar. It's yet another of my more annoying character traits, but if you're not willing to strive for perfection...

I woke up this morning to the news about George Harrison. The radio station promptly played my least-favorite of his songs, ever, "My Sweet Lord." Thankfully it was followed by the 'demo' rendition of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps." The passing of George may not be an event like the killing of John, but it's still sad to see such monumental icons lost to us forever.

It's Friday, and I'm all done with building computers, exploding and otherwise. I'm looking forward to two solid days of goofing off. Yeah!
  • Exploding Hardware! 2001-11-29 20:15:15 Wow! I didn't know power supplies could do that...

There I was, doing my thing (rebuilding computers ad infinitum) when I plug in the newest rig and press the Power button.

    BANG!

Smoke and dust and some tiny bits of debris fly out the back of the computer. Whoah...

Forensic study of the power supply determined that a capacitor had shorted and blown straight to hell. So much for that power supply. Luckily the motherboard, etc seems to be okay, since I'm installing WinBlows onto the unit as I type this.

    Fun day, what?
