JOURNAL: GreyDuck (Karel Kerezman)

  • Quick thank-you 2001-12-16 13:44:15 Hey, dreddnott... thanks for the link to the Sasami pic. Not bad at all, and probably good wallpaper fodder for the next time I feel like playing around in that OTHER Adobe software product.
  • Inspiration strikes! Call in the non-union muses! 2001-12-16 13:42:21 Hmm, that was nearly a clever title. I'm so good.

It always happens this way. I'm laying in bed, being my usual lazy good-for-nothing self, and suddenly it hits me. "It" tends to vary, but I usually get all fired up about "it" and I'm compelled to jump out of bed and do something about "it."

In this case, oddly enough, it's an AMV idea! Wow, imagine that, huh? Mind you, this means that my Iria video will languish for a while, but that's probably a good thing. (I realize now what the problem has always been with the Iria vid: too vague a concept. Do all creators go through a project/phase where "lots of action sequences set to some song I like" seems like a well-thought-out AMV idea? And how often does that project stall interminably until it's either scrapped entirely or completed in some half-assed fashion?)

Hmm, I should float that one past the forums some time. Anyway, this isn't an original concept, but I'm going to do it anyway. (The only "competitor" I turned up in a video search is by dokidoki. I'm not sure if I should download it so I know what I'm going up against, or if I should avoid doing so until after I've completed mine so I don't taint my efforts by lifting from his work, consciously or not. Yeah, I thought so too. Barring disaster, it'll still be here when I'm done.)

(And what's with the parentheses today, huh?)

Time to bring out the Tenchi OAV DVDs again. To quote from the great B-movie, _Tremors_, "I've got me a plan!"
  • Illness, grammar, and the lies we perpetuate 2001-12-15 14:53:11 I'm down with a cold today, yeah whoopie. Coughing, fever, sore throat, yadda yadda yadda.

I voted Unworthy an otherwise acceptable banner. Why? "More then just AMV's" doesn't work, folks. It's "More THAN." Please try again, thank you.

StudioKZ: The whole toy-tie-in thing is disgusting in and of itself, frankly. I always hear the voice of Mel Brooks saying "moi-chan-dizing!" But what really caught my eye was your stuff about perpetuating childhood fantasies. It's an odd dilemma, really. You want your kids to have a sense of wonder, but you don't want to build in too many unrealistic expectations about how the world works. And you don't really want to raise the local party-pooper either. It's a fine line we, as parents, must walk carefully. (For the record, I have a 9- and an 8-year-old.)

What really makes the difference is how you approach the moment of revelation, when the kid figures out that no, there is no Fill-In-The-Fantasy-Figure. "No, child, but it was kind of fun to think so when you were a little kid right? You're old enough now to know the truth about the world, and that's a very important part of growing up, being able to see and know what's real from what's not."

  • What comes may dream 2001-12-13 17:38:58 Funny, most of the dreams I remember having either involve sex or insects. No, I don't care to speculate as to why that is.

Had another fun Heatheriffic lunch today. She's all dressed up for her company party. Dressed very up. If she doesn't have guys lining up to give her their phone numbers tonight, something is just not right with the world, dammit.

I'm doing the Linux From Scratch routine on one of my main workhorses today. The test rig did so well that I can't wait to see what a real machine can do with a fully optimized, totally lean Linux install.

Tomorrow is a vacation day, so if I can kick papa-in-law and The Missus off the computer tomorrow I'll get a journal entry in... but don't count on it. Oh how I wish I had bandwidth! Three computers, one 56k modem. It just doesn't compute, pardon the expression.

I got The Missus into playing Need For Speed 5, though, and that's a real accomplishment. She tends to get motion sick playing any sort of 3D-environment computer game. This gives us something to play other than D2X and Age2:TC.

I'm SO looking forward to not being at work for three days. I'm so NOT looking forward to being in a houseful of brats all day long tomorrow. I guess you can't have everything...
  • Mommy, mommy! 2001-12-12 14:13:18 "I want a Wardick for Christmas! Can I? Can I? Huh?"

Thank you, shaister, for brightening my day considerably. I'll buy you a coke and a sprite next time you're in town...
