JOURNAL: badmartialarts (Raymond Rabke)

  • This video's gonna kill me 2004-06-26 13:56:49 Title: Trifecta
    Anime: Texhnolyse
Song: "Muzak for cybernetics" by Man or Astroman?
Poem: "my mind is..." by e.e.cummings

You might be thinking (if anyone reads my journal, which I doubt), "poem?" Yeah, I had this idea while listening to this freaky song by one of my favorite bands, Man or Astroman? (who I want to do some nice videos to with Black Heaven footage). The song is just strange. It's played on a theremin, which is a musical instument that uses the capacitance of the human body to produce something like music. It makes some creepy sounding stuff, and it was used a lot in old 50s sci-fi movies, which is why Man or Astroman? uses one. The song was begging to be made into some sort of horror video. The perfect source for footage immediately came to me: Texhnolyse, which is creepy science fiction from the makers of Lain. And, luckily, the first DVD is out stateside. But the combo wasn't enough, to me. Since the song lacks vocals, and is really just repetitive droning without too much of a 'beat' structure, I couldn't latch on to anything to edit with. Then, it hit me. No vocals, meant I could make my own words, and make the words part of the experience, hitting a person on three levels: the ear, the eye, and the brain. A trifecta, if I could pull it off.... Thus the project gained a name. But what words? I can sorta write poetry, but I just couldn't come up with anything that fit well. Then, another thought hit me: I'm already stealing a song and graphics from two other artist groups. Why not, again, go for the trifecta, and steal the words? So, I jumped online to an e.e.cummings repository, knowing ol' e.e. had probably written something that would work. I must have read a hundread poems till I stumbled on "my mind is...." which could be the basis for Texhnolyse's story in condensed form. Here's the poem:

    my mind is
a big hunk of irrevocable nothing which touch and taste and smell
and hearing and sight keep hitting and chipping with sharp fatal
    tools
in an agony of sensual chisels i perform squirms of chrome and ex
    -ecute strides of cobalt
    nevertheless i
feel that i cleverly am being altered that i slightly am becoming
something a little different, in fact
    myself
Hereupon helpless i utter lilac shrieks and scarlet bellowings.

But the poem has 11 lines, and I wanted 36 transitions. So, much like cutting anime into clips, I had to cut the poem into clips, and I think I not only preserved a lot of the structure (which is so important to a cummings poem), but I actually made it fit the song, and the animation, better.

Well, did I accomplish what I set out to? Don't know, still working on it. :P
Should be done is a week or so, though. I have to finish this now, it's even pulling me away from City of Heroes.
  • No Title For You! 2004-06-08 19:09:35 No real Internet access yet....waaah....must wait...till....Monday....arrgh!

Luckily, there are high-priced kiosks! 7.50 an hour for Internet Access! Yay?

So, as my time runs out....

Spying for Dummies...uhhm...died. My .avs files don't work anymore, and I can't really figure out why. Too lazy to fix the problem, so I just deleted and moved on....

Made a quick video the moment I unpacked my computer in sunny Fort Hood. Title: Fade Into Dreams
    Anime: Spirited Away
    Song: "Suffocate' by Sevendust

A bit of an odd pairing, you say? Actually, I think it worked out rather well, and on Monday I'll have it up for perusal by the masses, assuming I don't have to push back my installation appointment AGAIN.

Making another video off and on:
Title: No Title For You! (uhm, yet...probably stick with the song title)
Anime: Idol Project (ooh, it's originality!)
    Song: F-F-F-Falling! by The Ramsus
It's iffy. I'm trying to make it coherent, but I might just give up and make a 'ooh, pretty colors' type video out of it. (I can't really be blamed...Idol Project isn't too coherent either) It'll be my first true 'ooh, pretty colors' video, and I hope I can at least learn from it.

And three more projects already ready already, just waiting to borrow the source materials this weekend. So that'll be FIVE videos from Bad Martial Arts in a matter of weeks, or maybe months. Depends on my workload and my laziness quotient and whether my ideas look as good on the editing screen as they do in my head.

  • Moving sucks 2004-04-20 21:11:25 And that's all I have to say about that.

"Spying for Dummies" still on hold (sigh). Have the project and source files on an external hard drive. But I decided it would be great to ship my Premiere Pro disc with my computer. Which means no quick install on my friends computer and no editing, anyway. (cry).
  • The end..... 2004-04-05 07:53:46 Not the end, a new beginning!

Yes, I'm moving back to Texas. WOOHOO! Mexican food, Mexican *GIRLS*, it makes me want to put on a sombrero, pull out a guitarón, and become the next mariachi master! Okay...maybe not that much excitement involved. Actually, moving's a PAIN. No anime, no computer, no Internet, for a month or two until I get settled in Ft. Hood (and then, I'm highly likely to get unsettled by a trip to an exotic land...with lots of sand...if you get me.) So, editing is gonna be an hold, which is sad, because I haven't even made anything GOOD yet. :)

  • More MOAM ideas! 2004-04-04 22:48:10 They are just flowing out of me like Pedro's twin waterfalls of tears!

    Anime: Black Heaven.

Black Heaven (Kacho Oji for the Japanese and/or the otakus who refuse English titles out there) is a great show about rock music in outer space. So, what better band to sync clips to than Man or Astro-man?, who a) are a rock band and b) come from outer space?

So, a trilogy of videos came to my mind, while listening to my MOAM cds.

    Episode 1: The Watanabe Menace
Song: Evil Plans of Planet Spectra

This song and Black Heaven are perfect for each other. "Their robot planes were no mach for our music!"

    Episode 2: The Girlfriend/Wife Wars
    Song: ____ / myopia

This is a really pretty "power chord" instrumental ballad, so I intend to focus on Oji's two loves: his wife, and the alien girl who brings music back to him. Kind of long, though...plus, I've never tried a romance video. So, it'll be a good thing to do.

Episode 3: Bridge Bunny Bingo (yeah, I was trying to stick with the Star Wars names...but Episode 3 doesn't have a set sub-title yet)
    Song: Interstellar Hardrive

A fast, upbeat, twangy song to match the characters of the three bridge girls. Also a good line "Some disorentation isn't unusual after a protracted period in space...."
