current event
2005-04-05 00:30:58
The Pope died. I really don't feel affected, but I have one thought. The Pope sounds like he was a sweet old man in his lifetime, but I have a bone to pick with the Catholic church in general: Why would they force an old man, who has trouble even communicating with the people he is supposed to lead, to continue to be the head of one of the world's major religions? I don't have a Sinead O'Conner hate thing going on, but I feel that a change in regulations and terms relating to the Pope needs to be re-evaluated. When a group decides to appoint a figure as their leader for life, the risk emerges of abuse of that figure. For example, if the Pope has trouble speaking, possibly understanding the world around him due to Alzheimer's or another age-related disease, those people around him could manipulate him into making decisions that -they- make, as opposed to decisions that the Pope himself has made. This would eliminate accountability, as some shadowy figure manipulates an old man for his or her own profit.
Damn, if replies were available for journal enteries, I would get nothing but flames for this. The journal system works. Opinion on current event over.

angel's egg review
2005-03-31 00:06:54
Just watched the movie Angel's Egg by Oshii. Liked it. It was more abstract in many ways than End of Evangelion, but there was no build up, so no disappointment. Also, I notice the statue planet dripping water resembles the angel with acid dripping from its eyeball. Anno must have seen this movie, and been inspired by it. It would be hard not to be inspired. I really liked the artwork, especially the beautiful backgrounds. I notice those sorts of things. The whole movie was like a painting that came to life. I downloaded the movie torrent from animelab or something like that (for the one person who googled "angel's egg wanting to know where to find it.) The video quality was excellent, so much so that if I didn't know better, I'd swear it was dvd. Ideas for an amv are popping into my head like crazy. As for the characters:
The Girl.
*ugly
*innocent
*has fetish for collecting water in jars a la Howard Hughes.
The Man.
*quiet
*mysterious
*hates eggs
SPOILER ALERT:
As to the symbolism of Noah's Ark, I believe their world was created by some watery apocalypse. They must have survived somehow, but the animals didn't, hence the skeletons. Also, I believe she had parents at one time, but they must have died during the event that killed everyone.
When she jumped off the cliff, I believe the message was that she had lost her hope for the future, represented by the egg, and wanted to die. When she kissed her older self, that must have been her ghost. The eggs created by her air bubbles were her way of passing on her hope to the world, like she was saying "even though I no longer have hope, I will give my hope to you."
On the statue planet where her statue appears, I noticed at the end that from a certain angle, every statue could be holding an egg. Maybe the girl's philosophy waas dangerous to hold on to, and that's why the man freed her from it. Could all the people on the statue have had their own eggs at one time?

I love gunslinger girl.
2005-03-29 12:27:49
I just finished watching the last episode of gunslinger girl last night. It really is the best anime I have seen in a long time, and the best NEW, SERIOUS anime I have seen in a REALLY long time. Granted, Magical Shopping District Abenobashi on TechTv was great, but it was also more like a sequel to Excel Saga or Flcl.
I miss serial experiments lain.
Now, I'm looking for another downloadable series with the same high quality scripts & drama. Don't know how long that'll take. I also downloaded cosprayers, which is the the eact opposite of gg. If anyone knows of anything similar (and downloadable), I wouldn't mind being dropped a line via pm or email.

forced movie
2005-03-28 03:21:24
I got dragged along & coerced into seeing "downfall", a foreign-language film about the last 10 days of hitler's life. I thought it was going to be boring/offensive & I would hate it, 'cuz nazis are not my thing, but 2 of the characters made it bearable: the young girl who the movie centered on, and the professor/doctor guy. He looked so sad the whole movie, but also so hott. His name is Christian Berkel. Sadly, he lives in Germany, so there is absolutely no chance I will ever meet him *sigh*. Even a google search produced almost no results. You would think that in the 50 years he has been alive, he would have done more that the internet would care about. No bio, nothing. It's really none of my bizness anyway, but I don't care. I want to know more about this creature with the georgous facial bone structure & soulful eyes. Sadly, he was wearing clothes in the movie.

self control
2005-03-25 02:04:44
What does it mean? In the case of amv making, it not only means sticking to your video to completion, but also not making certain amvs. For example, I have about 3+ ideas for Inuyasha vids, but only downloaded footage to put in them. Now, I could remove subs & put 12 different effects on them like I did the one Trigun clip in my new video, but the whole vido would them look crappy. Instead, I will not make tthe videos, and instead make good videos with the dvds I do have. Restraint: it means there wont be an overload on Inuvids from me in the catalogue.
