Saw Bauhaus Friday. They ROCKED. They had much an amazing chemistry between them, you could realy see their individual personalities come through. Daniel Ash was really having fun playing to the crowd, I think there was a problem with David J.'s mike (I think that was him.) Kevin Haskins was totally shredding the drums, he was amazing and really "made" the show. Peter Murphy was whispering to the other guys in the band.
When they played "In the Flat Field" it blew away every version I have ever heard (which is only like 3 versions, but still....) When you feel the bass vibrations in your body, it's a life experience, not something you just hear or just watch. I was alive that night, for the first time in a long time.
Bauhaus live put concerts on a whole other level. They were part of a movement that was a backlash to disco, and they work SO well today, a force of nature against all the celebrity culture. Their atonal melodies and LOUD droning drum & bass are so perfect when they do them. No other band could ever match them the way they sound live. They were like Joy Division must have been like in the begining. I wish I could hear "Shadowplay" live, not on a video, but in person. Of course, when their bandmate commited suicide, the remaining members of JD formed New Order and went in a completely different musical direction, so in effect the band itself is dead too, living on only thru its music and the love of its fans.
More! I have more to say about Bauhaus & the show! I'll talk about the lighting. It was really cool how they didnt use any special effects. They did this lighting scheme. It was really engaging for the duration, but there were 2 times it stood out to me. One was where they had a row of mini spotlights pointing straight up. It just looked really cool. Another was during a song I didn't recognize, they did these colored lines and had them moving down. It was just like being inside a dream.
I will NEVER forget that concert, not just cuz I bought a t-shirt either. It was like watching them write the songs as they go. I wonder how much was impov and how much was rehearsed. Maybe I need to see them again and find out...They used instruments that night that I've never seen, like a keyboard that was also a whistle (or a whistle that looked like a keyboard?), and a xylaphone-like instrument. Daniel also used a stick of wood that I assume was like a violin bow on his guitar. That was so cool! And David rubbed his guitar on the mike stand to make these weird wobbly sounds when he played. It was the shit! Sugoi! Amazing!
Then after the concert I saw a parade of really creatively dresed goth-type people. Makes me want to update my wardrobe (again). Wish I had a camera just for that. All in all, one of the most amazing experiences of my life.

Just for the record, I really liked a lot of the Evanescence vids to "Bring me to life/wake me up inside." The best feature: Trigun, Blue Gender, & Utena. I had planned to make an Inuyasha vid as a tribute to midoriko, but now that's not going to happen. Probably for the best. Still it's sad that this had to happen.

OMG! Just read the new forum about wind-up records, wih the evanescence, seether, amy lee & such amvs being taken off the org. I really hope this doesn't snowball. If you ask me, it was a bad idea to put the google ads on the org in the first place. That puts the org into the attention of google. Google is a big corporation, getting bigger every day. They make money with all those sponsered links on their site. Big corporations like to control things. Imagine: you make a song. A firend asks if you can use it in a video. You say ok, all is fine. A big corporation sees an oportunity to make money. Say you are an artist on a big label. The label makes money when they sell mass quantities of your cd to retailers, you get 5% of the profits. When someone wants to use the song in a way that makes money, the person or group making money must pay a percentage of the profits for the item that made money to the record company. If a non-profit group wants to use the song, they pay a liecence fee. This means that the corporation makes money for nothing: they charge for the use of an intellectual property. This can be good for vsual artists. Imagine if someone took an image you drew, then screenprinted it on a t-shirt and sold it. With a liscence, you can say how long they can print t-shirts, how many, and get a percentage of the profits. Copyright is an intentionally gray area, but this is a really irritating issue for people who create fanart in the digital age. There is always parody and fair use, but those are becoming increasingly unclear.
In short: this is another reason why I hate big corporations. I really don't think I am alone is this. I'm not a hippie and I don't live in a commune or play folk songs, I just feel like consumerism has reached epic proportions in our culture. We should be human beings, not consumers! I try my hardest to avoid pouring my meager income into big companies, especially credit card companies, but in the end they got us by the balls. Everyone has debt, and interest rates continue to rise for the poor. I no longer buy anything on credit, EVER. Giving money to big companies feeds them. I hope that soon in America, people will wake up and start supporting small buisness, run by real people, not drones who follow rules set up by some huge company.
I suppose I might as well share the dream I envision: a world with no corporations, even a more rural world than the one I live in. I see pollution and advertising everyday. There is no undeveloped land within 50 miles of my house (I do live in California). The people I see everyday fit into 3 categories: cows, pigs, and sheep. Cows are stupid, staring into space. Sheep follow trends, rules, religion, dont think for themselves. Pigs spend their lives eating as much as they can, or consume to unhealthy proportions. I would like to see less horrible, bitchy people. I hate everyone around me, everyone in my neighborhood. My neighbors are all awful in their own ways, and all fit into one of these 3 categories. I wonder whatever happened to creative expression, not corporate oppression. I hate all marketed music, from rap to emo. I hate that people listen to Ashlee Simpson and the American Idol winners. I hated that show from the moment I heard about it, even before I first saw it. Musical talent should not be a commodity. I don't like pop music. Pop stars are produced. They sing other peoples songs, songs that were created in focus groups and researched by marketing directors. Mtv sucks, record labels suck, big companies suck.
And that's my rant.

Wow, its been forever since I've been able to get online. Had a problem with a cat fight, and the cable modem's connection rod-thingy to the coaxial cable being broken. Got a new cable modem, back online.
On the positive side, being offline has lead to me being so bored I actually got some cleaning done around here. I also wrote my film class paper and artist statement. I have just been -so- productive lately.
I feel like I deserve a reward, so I'm thinking of going out to a meetup.com meeting of something or another. I haven't decided which one. I have a feeling I will absolutely hate it, but at least I'll know. I also need to start going out to more concerts, the last one was Halloween and that was over a month ago. *Pout!*
After I burn some of the larger files on my mard drive to dvd (the masters for the dvd quality amvs I made), I will probably have enough space to consider making amvs again. It's weird, but since I started thinking about video quality, everything has these tiny errors that I notice. Like I was in circuit city today looking at tvs on the way out, and they al had these little defects, like halos around the picture, or waviness, or a weird codec, or pixellation, or even macroblocking. It could be that the they were playing, the polar epress movie, was a poor quality dvd to begin with, as even my fruits basket dvd isn't perfect quality, but I think that the problem was with the tvs themselves. Weird.
I LOVE fruits basket, more so on dvd. It's weird how much your viewing experience can be enhanced by a higher quality source. The only problem so far is that episode 18 wont work. I'm just going to skip it and return the dvd to the store later. Honda Tohru is a really strange, interesting character. She's pretty much the opposite of me, selfless and caring about others. I can only truly relate to her in episode 19, when she gets sick and feels like a failure. I am going to try being a bit more kind to others, since it seems to work for her. Ha ha, that show is like a quick reference guide to ironing out personality defects. Or so I hope...
Good night, and good surfing.
