JOURNAL: Alternababe (Sabrina )

  • 2663 hits 2006-10-12 14:31:57 OMFG, Katie's journal link to the album covers movie on youtube is so fucking funnny! The table of people next to me in the library all turned around to check it out.

Kinda crazy day today. Got my paper printed, so now I got a minute to record my life. Last nite my digital art teacher took us on a field trip (wel, the students all carpooled) to USC. It was okay, kinda nice to get outta class, saw a grad student's thesis film. It was a total rip-off off A.I., I, Robot, Terminator, Bjork's All is full of Love video, & Especially Minority Report. During the 3 hours the director was explaining the Shake program & each & every effect & how it was made, he said most of his ideas were from Minority Report, The plot of the movie was a guy worked for a firm that made cyborgs. An anti-cyborg senetor was killed & replaced by a cyborg, so the guy quits his job & goes home. When he gets home, a cyborg tried to kill him. Turns out the guy was the cyborg all along, and the cyborg that tried to kill him was the real him. Kinda cheesy. I think it was called element 9 or specimen 9 or something.

Anyhoo, same teacher had another field trip to usc today, with another class I have him for, but I forgot what day it was, so I showed up & there was no one there. Tried to call a guy I know (& used to date) in the class, but got voice mail.

Then there was a building evac drill. So I said screw it, the field trip was optional anyway, so now I have some free time. Yay!

    To the chiropractor!

    And the car wash.....
  • 2661 hits 2006-10-12 14:00:13 Woohoo! My school has wireless internet, so I can go online between classes. Sadly, still no internet @ home & no email, which is BAD!!!
  • 2568 hits 2006-09-16 19:04:49 An excerpt from a newsy email to my grandparents:

Classes are going okay. One of my teachers tried to fix some blinds in the classroom, & when he jumped down from the 3-foot ledge to reach them, he broke his leg. Apparently, he'll be out for a month, so another teacher is taking over his classes. I now have the same teacher 4x a week.
There's a Starbucks on campus, as well as a Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf, but both suck. Also, there is only non-dairy creamer, which I can't use unless I feel like throwing up. There's a krispy kreme around, but I haven't found the correct way there yet. They have 2 donuts & coffee for $2. On campus, drip coffee is $3 a cup!!!
I can park on campus. It is lighted, altho there are many dark spots. It's pretty crowded at night, tho. I'm so tired right now, I SO don't want to go to my might classes. I'm also super glad it's Friday. Well, Thursday is my Friday. After 10pm tonight, I get the weekend off to catch up on my cleaning & studying. Yay.
My car needs the top repaired before I can wash it, which it badly needs. I have to find time this weekend to research & make an appointment with a reputable car repair place, have them fix the top, put in brake fluid, smog the thing, etc. I just don't know what to do; everyplace in a 10 mile radius is a shithole, & anyplace farther is too much of a drive, & still probably not worth a damn. I asked aaa, but the place they recommended was a shithole: half-primed stucco paint, metal security fence & bars on the windows kinda place.
Also, I need to set up my desk, have the internet people come out & move my internet connection back into my room, clean my room (no energy for that any time soon!), study more, and probably get photoshop. I'm trying to avoid buying that program: it costs over $299. I hate expenses. Wonder if I have time to quickly wash my hair before rushing back to school...
  • 2547 hits 2006-09-14 17:14:38 So tired...3 hours sleep & 18 upper division units can do that to you, I suppose. Got class til 10pm tonight, then the weekend off, mostly for chores, but I think I'll try to sneak in some me time XD

For the post, here's more homework. For my tv class, out homework was to watch tv. I need a tv...

    Bobobo-BO Bo-bo-bo
"The super showdown in cyber city"

This show is dubbed Japanese children's animation, about a man called Bobobo-BO Bo-bo-bo with a great golden afro. It is set in a land where it is illegal to have hair. He uses his giant, living nosehairs to defeat the bad guys. In this episode, he was on a boat shaped like pink poo, which crashed into a lake of ice, which was broken by torpedo-girl, a half torpedo half human girl. She then fell in love with the boat's captain, who had a head made of pink poo, & towed their boat to cyber city. Then Bobobo-BO Bo-bo-bo got his own arts-n-crafts show, and he & his posse went to the stadium of baldification & fought the cyber knight in a giant ball of twine. Their attacks included turning into geisha girls, ballerinas, and the dumb-ball, which turned the ghost-friend into the top of his class in a school full of dancing stuffed bears. Then the one who was made of the sun threw his desk at the bad guy. After that, Bobobo-BO Bo-bo-bo morphed into a jet car, then a piano teacher, then threw a piano at the bad guy, then the sun-guy dressed up like Beethoven & played a song about it. And it goes on like this, until the bad guy is defeated by the nose hair spiderweb attack, and it is revealed that the heros muct now fight 5 other cyber knights, with the powers of fire, water, ice, rock, & cylinders.
Ok. I swear I'm not making this up, although I sort of wish I was. I can handle weird, but this is above & beyond any normal human tolerance. To compare it to Excel Saga, another show, which I liked, that show was pretty weird & hyper, but had a more interesting plot, better character development, & more plausible gags. Watching "Bobobo-BO Bo-bo-bo" was sort of like watching the 2nd Pirates of the Caribbean movie in that every plot twist felt unmotivated & confusing. I ffeel like my intellegence has been degraded to the point that the featurette after the anime, about the US Open RoboCup, was infinitely more engaging. The characters are all essentially the same person in different bodies: mindless, nonsensical & hyperactive.
As for the commercials during the show, they were for toys based on Naruto, Superman Returns, & Transformers, as well as DBZ DVDs & a DVD about internet safety featuring a man with pigtails being beaten by a gorilla.

    Shin-Chan
"Lactose Overdose," "Meet the Parasites," "Run for your life, Georgie Brown"

Put simply, this show is the Japanese Family Guy. The main character is Shin-chan, a little boy who lives with his seemingly average family in the suburbs. The format is a bit different from most shows I'm used to: instead of one main plot, it has 3 totally seperate mini-episodes. The first was about Shin-chan needing 10 milk cartons for a class project, but he only told his mom the day before, so they have to drink all the milk quickly, because they have no room in the fridge. It quickly becomes clear that Shin's mom is not going to be nominated for mother-of-the-year any time soon. She treats him more like a brother, slaps him around a little, and constantly complains about her lack of jugs. In the end Shin-chan decided to use the milk for a milk bath, which his mother wanted all to herself. She did get her milk bath, but what her husband didn't tell her is that her daughter peed in the tub first! In the 2nd episode, the neighbors leech off the main family until they get kicked out. In the 3rd episode, Shin is late for his play date with his friends, so they make a pact that anyone who's late can't talk to any girls for 24 hours. As a side note the reason Shin is late late is because he was doing his elephant dance, where he drew an elephant face on his crotch & his child wee-wee became the elephant's trunk. As he explained to his friends, he stopped dancing because he peed on the audience, his baby sister. So back to the story. The next day, Georgie is talking up this cute girl & loses track of time, while Shin-chan wasted time doing his ass dance. Shin-chan wants to flirt with hot Nanako, another of his neighbors, so he decides to race Georgie to see if they can get the the park by 2pm. They go by skateboard, foot, train, truck, etc. but are still late, and the episode ends with Shin at the dinner with not Nanako; sadly he has a bandage over his mouth, which naturally pleases his mother.
Judging from the previews, this show was destined to be out there. The previews consisted of some of the worst animation I've ever seen, all featuring Shin's ass dance, for about 3 minutes. Thinking to myself "ok, either this is a kids show, or something is very wrong," I decided to ignore it. Naked animated kid butts remind me of "Super Milk-chan," a weird-ass anime about...something.....but I'm not sure what. Shin-chan actually had writing, and many of the jokes were very funny. I might even watch it again just for the crazy characters. The kids were as sarcastic as they come, and the adults were flawed without being too hackneyed.
The commercials were for other shows on Cartoon Network's [adult swim]. I remember in one of their bumpers, they mentioned that they had 6 minutes less of commercials than other networks. I think they have less now, maybe because the Family Guy merch has sold so well. The commercials that stood out to me were for "Metalpocalypse," which I have been waiting forever to see, and the ones that made me go WHOOT!!!! were for "Bleach" * "Trinity Blood." I had already seen the subbed version of Bleach, and was a bit disappointed they chose Johhny Yong Bosch to be the voice of Ichigo on that show instead of the voice of the main character in Trinity Blood, which I think his personality would be better suited to.

    Triinity Blood

Set in the future, mankind has brought about its own apocalypse. Because of this, vampires are now everywhere. Also, a creature that feeds on vampires now exists. the main character of the show, Peter Abel Nightroad, is one of those. The episode takes place on a luxury airship, hijacked by a notorious vampire. Goofball Peter is downstairs, ordering a milk tea with 13 sugars & chatting up a cute girl, Jessica, who wants to be a pilot. The captain asks Jessica for some coffee, which she brings him, as well as letting Peter tag along. The pilot & co-pilot are killed, and Peter & Jessica run off. Cut to the Vatican, where some priests are deciding whether or not to shoot down the airship, which would kill the vampire but also all the passengers. Long story short, Peter confronts the vampire of top of the airship, pulls a personality 180 from goofball to hardass, kills said vampire, returns to goofball-ness. He then rejoins Jessica, who tries to pilot the airship away from an oncoming missile, which comes courtesy the Vatican. The missile is destroyed by an onknown guy in a 2nd airship, and the episode ends.
I was a little dissappointed by this. It's basically Trigun meets Hellsing. The main character is exactly the same personality-wise as Vash the Stampede from Trigun, and the set-up is exactly like Hellsing, from the vampire premise to the Vatican, all the way down to the angry blond woman who moves the plot along with boring dialogue. Even many of the shots & "camera angles" were a lot loke Hellsing, & the vampire could have passed for Alucard (main character: Hellsing), or at least his identical twin. I'm hoping that the show will get better, because the animation & character designs are sleek, even for not being too original. As Hellsing was stopped mid-season, I might even consider this a sequel to that show. The X-Files got better after the first episode, so maybe this will, too.
Same commercials as Eureka 7, but with promos for the new season of "Robot Chicken".

    Saturday 9-9-06 8:30-9pm
    Bleach

This was the first episode. The show is horror/action/ghost story about a boy named Ichigo. He & his family can see & interact with ghosts. A young girl ghost is chased by a giant monster. Ichigo tries to fight it, but is unable to. A mysterious girl named Rukia uses her giant sword to destroy the monster. Ichigo goes home, peaceful until one of his sisters hears a noise; another giant monster is attacking the girl. This time, he interferes with Rukia, and she is injured by the monster. She reveals that she is a soul reaper, and the monster is an evil soul called a hollow. Then she explains that because she is too injured to fight, she will transfer some of her power to Ichigo so he can defeat the hollow. She does so, and he wins, but she gave him too much power, and now she is too weak to fight hollows for a while. After sending the spirit of the dead girl to soul society, which is live heaven, she decides to live with Ichigo until her power comes back.
Having seen the subbed version, I eagerly awaited the dub. Since it was liscenced by Viz, I was not disappointed. The animation is a bit cruder than I like, especially when it comes to the hollows. It was nice to see the show crisp & clear on a 13" analog tv. It's hard to say at this point whether or not I like the show. In the subbed version, the action moved very quickly, so trying to read the lengthy subtitles was difficult, and I missed a lot of dialogue. This version was much easier to follow, although I think the English voice acting leaves a bit to be desired. The characters were a bit strange, and if a romance develops between Ichigo & Rukia later in the show, I think it might stir things up a bit. So far, it's a bit formulaic, but it has it moments. This episode feels a bit empty, as though it has an element or two missing, but that could just be because of the serial format.
The commercials were exactly the same as for Eureka 7, although there was a new promo for Aqua Teen Hunger Force, which was a live action model of Meatwad, made of actual meat, being burned in reverse. Kinda creepy & gross, actually.

    Saturday 9-9-06 9-9:30pm
    Eureka 7

Standard giant mecha alien invasion military kids-as-pilots show. This is a serial, and since I only ever watched about half of the 1st episode, I was pretty lost coming into this. Best I can figure, Elrica, mom character beloved by all, was covered in pink goo, and all the other characters are upset by this. Brunette girl is jealous because blond guy likes Elrica more than her, Renton (main character kid) is angry at everyone, blond guy pretends not to care, but then saves a priest who is the only one who can cure her. The events centered on everyone's reactions to blond guy's action of chasing the bounty instead of taking Elrica to the hospital, & obviously his true intentions are explained before the end.
This show won't ever be in my list of top tens. Aside from being aimed at a slightly younger audience than my demographic, the characters were pretty generic, from their design right down to their predictible actions & somewhat dull personalities. I already saw this show, and it was called "Evangelion," "RahXephon," "FLCL," & to a lesser expent "Wolf's Rain." Perhaps I would have liked it better if I had started at the begining. Perhaps this episode was the climax of tension that had been building gradually from the show's onset. Unlikely. Everyepisode of everyseries of Gundam could have replaced this episode, and I doubt it would've felt any different. Even when the characters tried to gain empathy & understanding, they still felt flat.

    Futurama

Futurama is an animated American show created by Matt Groening, of Simpsons fame. It is set in New New York City, circa the year 3000. Fry, the main character, is a 20th century average joe who was accidently frozen cryogenically for 1,000 years. This was the episode with the giant garbage ball of 20th century garbage returning to earth, which will surely destroy New New York City. Can Farnsworth, aging professor who was just humiliated by a rival scientist at a scientific forum, redeem himself by saving New New York City? Yes, sort of. Farnsworth makes a bomb to blow up the garbage ball, but it fails. Fry suggests making a 2nd ball of garbage to knock the 1st one into the sun. It works.
I've seen this episode lots of times, but it never gets old. the characters are classic & consistent. The jokes are always relevent & fresh, and some even make you think a bit. Since the show's format is mostly stand-alone episodes, with a few changes to the general setting throughout (Fry moves in with Bender in episode 2 & stays there, Amy & Kif hook up.) Matt Groening is smart to insert a message sometimes, like in this episode, he makes a poignant observation on wastefullness & recycling.
At this point, I drifted off to sleep during the commercials, but I believe they were mostly for things like girls gone wild & phone sex lines, also [adult swim] DVDs.
  • 2521 hits 2006-09-10 23:49:34 Been busy lately, just the way I like it. sadly, got my period, so spent the day slowly reading manga (peach fuzz is my new guilty pleasure...) and amphigories (edward goery r.i.p.)

Since pretty much the only thing I've had time for is homework, why not post it here?

Below is my very 1st assignment, for my digital art class. We had to think of 5 ideas that could be anything related to digital prod. Enjoy!

    FEA 337, Wed 5-7:45pm

    "5 Ideas"

    1. Music video made from the anime Gunslinger Girl & its manga, to Kodachrome by Simon & Garfunkle, where the animated scenes are superimposed onto the corresponding frames in the manga.

    2. A web site with a scratch-n-sniff card, sent by mail, that contains smells to supplement the sights & sounds on the site.

    3. DVD menu for Adaptation, that has different orchids as menu buttons.

    4. Fish-fyte.com, a betting website with 2 fighting fish, & they battle to the death in realtime, as people watch via streaming webcam. The video feed would be in an imbedded media player shaped like a fishbowl.

    5. A website background covered with different flowers, and each one has a link to another part of the site.
