  • Avid: Non Linear Editing System or Falic Symbol? 2001-10-03 12:14:16 It's all the same...

Moog Synthesizers, Avid Editing Systems, BMWs

I think they're all nice, but not necessary... an example:

Work - I have an avid to work on, and its nice, but I know that it's true
power lies in its ability to do noncompressed junk.... this is just video
production. It impresses the clients, though... "Ooh, nice avid"... if I could be taken seriously by the people who don't really know the ins and outs on my other computer at work (Pinnacle Studio DV, Premiere 6.0, dual 400MHz PIII's, DV Deck), I'd use that instead... it's just like if I had a job where they gave me a beemer to drive around in... sure, I'd drive it, who's gonna bitch? If it came down to it, though, I'm not a beemer type guy, I'm a ranger type guy (with a brak sticker on the back!), and that's what I'd drive, because I'm more at home there... no pretentions.

    another example:

Music - I used to have a moog synth (one of the many synths I have), and I
thought they were SOOO cool, but really, it was not working that well, and
was causing me more and more frustration every time I turned it on... but it was like a relic... some holy object that can magically... not... work???? now, by the advice of mannny other synth players, I should NEVER have sold it ("Oh! you sold your Opus 3???" "But that's one of the synths the Rentals Use!!"), but instead, I used the money down the road to buy some other gear I needed to hook my computer up to my recording gear, and get that going... a worthwhile investment, if you ask me!

Anyone I know who is either A. From Germany or B. Spending Vacations in
Germany A Lot agrees with me totally on this point... BMW's are crap, and you're better off with a Toyota or a Honda, or something like that: It's the same level of quality. Well, it all applies: If you wish you had an Avid, don't: build a computer and load Premiere, or Final Cut (this allows for Mac/PC preference, which is another story entirely, and will not be mentioned
here). If you wish you had a Moog (how many synth players out there?), don't: Get a nice Roland keyboard! They actually work!

    Rant Complete!

  • Shite 2001-10-02 19:51:47 Where I said "my computer" in my last entry, I meant "my capture Card"
  • Homicidal Recital 2001-10-02 19:48:27 My computer sits there, barren on the floor...

I recall the words I was told by Jerry (cutting edge) (aka, one of the names in the history)... "No no no... you're too caught up in this idea of glamourous editing... do you know my favorite system? It's the one that is putting the damned food on the table... now lets go have a cigarette..."

Recent plans foiled by this statement:

Glamour 01: Avid Xpress DV - Failed
screw these things, they're over priced, and really, they aren't that good. Infact, the only nice thing about them is the avid OMFI media files, and their prettyness... but, still, no one needs this.

Glamour 02: Discreet Edit - Failed
screw this thing too.... mirrors the avid system my ass! The only thing it mirrors is the price. Another huge ass NLE that could be easily replaced by a nice double processor PC and a copy of Premiere 6.0 (sorry for those of you who don't like premeire... Final Cut Pro, or whatever else you want to use that can do DV capture).

Glamour 03: Used Avid 8000 - Never Attempted
screw this thing the hardest. What a sick sick joke to ask people to pay $15,000 for a cruddy old Mac, 2 60 Gig HD towers, and a "decent" editing program. The only nice thing about this is the 3D box, and that is a pain since it isn't incorporated. Oh yeah, sure, the capture card is nice, and it looks pretty, but if you do things right, you can build your own system that will turn out almost as good of a product... well, probably better than one of these behemoths, and their degrading hardware.

Glamour 04: Used GVG - Shouldawouldacoulda
it was 50 bucks, and it came with 3/4" decks... I wasn't sure if it worked or not, but what a classic peice of gear... kept thinking, though... "$50 bucks is half of a Pinnacle Studio DV card..."

my point: I'm going to go load the software that came with my computer on it, and start laying down some f-ing video!
  • Gahhh! 2001-10-02 17:56:26 I was just thinking: I'm always scared to be critical of other peoples artwork...

I guess sometimes I should just go off... no,no... this is why I'm not, like, a food critic or anything. Yes, so I'm STILL at work. Stillllll!

Ok, I need to tell these people to Foff!
  • But that's the way the cookie crumples over (tragical grammertical errers) 2001-10-02 17:29:24 Lookee lookee, I get to stay late:)

My brain hurts today for some reason... no, it's just strained...

The thought of baby food makes me sick to my stomach... (I bring it up because of the thought of Strained Peas... yuch+0)

My new computer has been dubbed "Euclid"......... It's starting to look like it could play the part: The 3.5 drive front cover snapped off lastnight while I was reassembling the case... oh well, what do I expect for 12 bucks? Now there's this gaping mechanical orifice where one might expect a voice to come from, but really, it's just a repository for your old 486 files that you never got to burn to cd.. that and your 4 year old copy of TIE Fighter, which you load on windows 98 just to remember how much of a geek you were, and presumably still are... other people do that too, right?

I should make a webpage for my studio... I need to name it first...

Then I need to put a studio together, rather than a desk with a pile of papers and video tapes on it... then I could take pictures of it, and put it up on the internet! And then, someone could break into my house and steal all my stuff, and I could be sad. I hope they don't take my cat, though... I wouldn't wish that on anyone!
