JOURNAL: Big Big Truck (E K)

  • Sanctary et ovis 2002-02-23 23:32:13 Two delicious anime DVDs are on their way, and I'm working on a job that will enable me to get a 100GB HD.

Oh. Oh yes. There will be AMVs from me this year.
None competing in anything, of course.
  • there's a naked person standing in my flat! 2002-02-23 01:13:05 kyburg: thanks for the kind thoughts & emails. :3 I'm doing better today - I really shouldn't have stayed home from work, I suppose, but I went ahead and called in sick last night when I was still feeling cruddy. Oh well. Not like there was that much to do today at Real Job anyway.

I love working for a university - sure, it pays low, but if you're sick you're sick, and if you take vacation you take vacation. No 12 hour days or unexpected Saturday work; no inventory days or emergency meetings. The closest thing we've had is the beginning-of-semester rush.

Got a buttload of the freelance work done today - about 50 MBs worth of EPS graphics. Brett and I are getting to work on finishing the batch together tomorrow; I'm paying him however much of the cut he does - I need the help, he needs the cash.

Today's been basically good, overlooking the general aspect of not leaving the house and doing pie charts all day (but hey, money money). KUT's been playing a lot of great Afro-Cuban and Brazilian music (including some Jorge Ben!), and 1337 has kept me company. He's currently potatoed on my bed, all content and squinty-eyed in the cat-patented "I own this room" way.
Ahh, now KUT's playing Stereolab & Air. Did I mention how much I love Austin radio?

OH!! Speaking of which - I can't believe I forgot to mention this earlier - there's been a new release of a collection of jazz songs through Verve records - it's remixed classic material. The sample that I heard was Tool and Tricky teamed up on Billie Holiday's "Strange Fruit". Utterly incredible. I can't wait to pick this up (along with the Deltron 3030 instrumental edition!)

I was saddened to learn that Chuck Jones passed away today. I always enjoyed his scratchy, slightly cute take on his characters, and his skill in depicting humourous situations through gestures and expressions. And oh! The opera short! And the singing frog! Genius.
    He will be sorely missed.

A friend of mine is about to be interviewed on the radio program I'm listening to right now! How exciting!
If you've been to the illustration section of my website and seen the "Gynomite" promo art, she's the one I drew that for. She teaches yoga and leads feminist porn writing workshops. Her book is excellent and I recommend it to guys and gals alike.

(BTW, today's subject header is still a song lyric, as always.)

What? This is an AMV journal?
  • I sit two stories above the street / it's awful quiet here since love fell asleep 2002-02-22 01:15:20 Freelance Job From Hell is looking less like Hell and more like just a lot of hard work for a lot of cash. Evens out OK. At least I won't have to worry about webhosting or car repairs anymore. Might even buy a whole new wardrobe, if the car mess isn't too pricey. Lord knows I could use some nice clothes.

The more I think about it, the more I think I will quit competing. I won't stop making AMVs, but... considering how nasty people get over awards... really, it's not worth it. I just want people to enjoy the videos that I enjoy making. That's better than any prize. And no prize is worth having lots of people mad at you for no good reason.

So, look for my AMVs in AWA's Expo next year :D
  • while you are away / my heart comes undone / slowly unravels / in a ball of yarn 2002-02-21 13:00:14 Lord Rae: Those outtakes ROCKED. (And I'm apathetic towards Kenshin.) I love seeing tidbits like that. Thanks!

Well, got the contract sealed and signed on The Freelance Job From Hell. Hopefully everything will go smoothly from here on out. I'm going to be EATEN by this job for the next week.

My throat feels like someone sandpapered it >_<
  • I can't stop loving you / I've made up my mind / to live in memory of the lonesome times 2002-02-20 23:52:47 Just got back from seeing Metropolis.
DAMN. I could sit and look at those pretty pictures all day. As for the story... uh... I could sit and look at those pretty pictures all day.

But that second-to-last segment, with the Ray Charles song... good GOD. That about blew me out of my seat. That has to be the most impressive piece of animation I've seen in the past 2 or 3 years at least. Not just for the visuals (I actually preferred the background art over the cels and CG), but for the direction - the pairing of music and visuals and the timing of the story. That part alone was well worth the price of admission.

I'm trying to think of songs I'd use for a Metropolis AMV... and I'm coming up blank. I wonder if ANY music can encompass those visuals.

On the other hand, been plotting out my next AMV which I will start on as soon as the DVD arrives and I pick up a new 100 GB HD.
Ha ha ha. Everyone's going to HATE this video except Jingoro and Brad, because it's set to That Damn Granola-Eatin' Guitar-Playin' Southern DykeGrrl Music. Ha ha ha.
Aside from EVERYONE HATING IT, it's going to be good. And I'm going to love making it. So there :D

I'm thinking about not competing anymore - just doing Expo at AWA and noncompetitive entries elsewhere from now on.
