And what do you know.
12 hours after having to break the Health Institute contract, I get a request from Stone Bridge Press to do the cover illustration of their next anime book (they published Gilles Poitras' cool "Anime Encyclopedia".)
Sweet. Maybe we can work something out. I better finish this cyberpunk girl commission first, though.

Hsien: Once again, I swear we're living parallel lives. Brett gave me that same Giant Robo figure for my 24th birthday.
Screw the flowers-and-chocolate crap. A GIANT ROBOT IS FOREVER.

Replying to MCWagner while waiting for work order:
"EK: Two things, one short, one long. 1) What's the name of that jazz album?"
I'm afraid I don't know... All I know is that it's released through Verve Records.
"The AWA Masters' contest was specifically made to coax several of the more experienced hobbyists back into the fold after they left for fear of engendering the sort of petty spite and jealousy we're starting to see here."
I know, but I still don't feel I'm up to a level where I'd feel comfortable entering Masters yet. Maybe this year, if my big project works out. One problem is that my videos tend to be more fast paced and action-oriented, and that seems to be frowned on in Masters. *shrug*
I honestly DON'T CARE if I win ANYTHING, as long as people enjoy my work. One person approaching me after the show to say "hey, that was cool" is worth just as much - or more - than any slip of paper IMO.
"I don't know about you, but without regular competition, I'd never get anything done. The competition prompts me to try something unique and put more time and effort into the vid. Without a deadline, I'd still be working on my second vid."
Yeah, deadlines and exhibitions help. I don't know if COMPETITION inspires me, but looking at others' work (particularly Hsien's, of late) makes me want to keep pushing my editing further.
"Purely selfishly...Awwwww Come on! I take over one of the major contests and people start dropping out of competition! How fair is that? :( (kidding)"
Which one are you overseeing?
"Of course, all this is mediated by your statment that you wanted to keep competing in Expo. Is it just because of the judging by someone other than the other competitors? Do you consider it a "less targeted" competition than the others? Or the "make up whatever goofy awards we wanna give" aspect? Just curious."
Expo just seems less contested, less volatile; more friendly and free-spirited and fun than the others. I kind of get the feeling that Expo entries are for the love/fun of the craft, whereas Pro and Masters are Made With The Goal Of Winning.
Am I making any sense?
The main disadvantage of entering Expo only is that I won't be able to know when my work is shown, and it won't get as large of an audience (yes, I'm a total whore for applause.)
I'm still debating... I guess most of this will depend on how my videos turn out this year.
I'll have three again this year (to three different anime, two of them to artists no one else has used), looks like.

Lord Rae: Oh, it's not that... I know my videos aren't Caldwell-quality (by a long shot)... it's just that I've seen so much venom being thrown around w/r/t video competition that regardless of how my work does, I don't really think I want to be a part of competitive events any more. I still plan to show my videos when I can, but I don't want to get involved or be involved with the ego battling and one-upmanship that seems to be more and more prevalent these days.
I mean, look at the hissyfits thrown about the VCA... if that was any indication of things to come, imagine what AX 2k2 or AWA's competition will be like. Gaah. No thank you.
I guess it's like leaving a party that's starting to go sour...
I'll probably be submitting one video noncompetitively at Jacon, *maybe* competing with something at Acen, depending on what I get done, and submitting a load of stuff to AWA's Expo and Dance shows.
Oh yeah, it looks like I'm going to Central.
Toshihiro Kawamoto... woooooo.

Not much to share today, except that the weather's lovely. Woke up this morning with Bob presenting his belly to me for a rub. When I didn't comply with his wishes, he stuck his big ol' paw on my face. -_-
On the other hand, I now know what counties in Texas have the most cases of heart disease, hepatitis, and the clap. Yee-haw! Valuable info for all you AMV editors.
Downloaded a couple of UncleMilo's AMVs to review, since I'm at Brett's (ahh, DSL.)
Ooh! Also got live versions of "Tank" and "Blue" from the Seatbelts show at Shibuya-AX last year. DELICIOUS.
