JOURNAL: Big Big Truck (E K)

  • an' that old wind is howling like a cold steel train / girl has left me / not coming back again 2002-03-13 12:52:58 Can't make a music video? Make a wallpaper. Today it's "A Real Indication", which I almost started on but discarded once I realized I couldn't hack it through the second verse.

I love Collateral Damage. Custom Ralph Steadman tribute font = beauty.
  • voices rise and fall / battle trumpets call / I fill the bath and climb inside 2002-03-13 08:04:25 Amizadai: Thumbnail Theatre Jacking only takes me about five minutes to do, once I decide what motif to go with. Ahh, the wonders of batch image processing. (It also helps that I have nothing to do at work.)

Bowler: Thanks so much for the kickass gift art!! It's going up on the site today.

I've pretty much ditched my U2 idea. Not happening. Too offensive, too much of a stretch. Fortunately I have a stand-in ready that's going to be just about as cool.
Looks like I'll actually be venturing into two genres I don't like: AngstyPretentiousBritPop and 4/4BoomBoomDanceClub.

    But whatever.

In other news, Andrea Yates was found guilty yesterday. I was honestly surprised - I expected the trial to drag on for months a la OJ. I wonder how this will affect the use of insanity pleas in the future.
Personally, I'm completely ambivalent about the death penalty - it's one of those issues I can see both sides of, and I really can't decide how I feel about it. (Which I suppose would mean that I'm ambivalent. Way to be reudundant, EK.)
Still, I'll be surprised again if Yates does get the death penalty. There are a lot of folks crying for blood, but there are just as many wondering if ending it quickly isn't too soft of a punishment.
Either way, I'm glad for the conviction. Frankly, I don't care if someone's mentally retarded, or insane, or has no sense of right or wrong - if they kill, they kill; if they rape, they rape, and the suffering of the victim(s) isn't lessened in any way by some sort of deficiency within the perpetrator's cranium.
As for the Husband Issue... I don't really know enough about that to form an opinion one way or the other, but the whole, "Gee, my wife's kinda nutso and has tried to kill herself a few times, maybe she should stay home and take care of 5 kids" thing really irks me.

I'm so glad I'm not responsible for another person's life and well-being. I'd do a terrible job.

    DAILY LILEKS
Of course, Bleat today is great as always (work safe, of course):

"I am not a poo-poo puppy. I am a mighty wolf, even though I am reduced to hanging around this whelp’s chair waiting for a piece of macaroni to be flung down like some Olympian boon."

    HOOGERBRUGGE
Wild flash site - pretty cool, very unique stuff. "Retribution", "Why Not Sneeze", and the "Square Peg in a Round Hole" series are my faves. Pretty disturbing if you think about them though. (Work safe, but needs sound and is rather heavy. Also, you know, existential malaise and the like.)

"I need a Big Mac with lots of onions."

    JUNK-PAINTING
I visited this site several years ago, and it's good to see it still up. He's added comics and a Painter tutorial. I love artists who can distort and exaggerate forms but still retain a solid structure. Probably not work-safe, there's some cheesecakey content...

  • Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip / and everybody knew you didn't give no lip to Big John 2002-03-12 14:43:49 14,000 journal hits. Nuts.

Kyburg: Man-tastic link has been sent your way. I sent it to your other address, since the one on your profile page doesn't seem to be working.

    Once again, the fun continues:

  • gold from the breakfast tray / I steal them all away / and then go eat them on the shore 2002-03-12 07:20:22 AbsoluteDestiny: Thank you SO MUCH for that bossa MP3. It's GORGEOUS. I think for the next Let's Classy, there should be a Latin theme. Have Tito Puente playing on the stereo, etc. etc.
There are far too few Latin AMVs out there.

Speaking of AMVs (which I really don't do enough of on this journal, considering its purpose), I think it's really funny when someone trash-talks another creator and all of his/her videos, then in the next breath asks me why I'm thinking about quitting competition. -_-

I apologize to everyone who may have visited Diabolism through my link yesterday and been disconcerted by all the sweaty-man-love... I'd only done a quick perusal of the sketch gallery, and thought "aww, cute kitty pictures!". I had no idea how adult the rest of the content was. m(_ _)m
(On the other hand, FFX would be a hell of a lot funnier if it did have that sort of... um... stuff... in it.)

Still, I wish I could draw like that. What really gets me is that the artist is only 17!! Gaaaaah, she's so talented T_T

(Ner ner ner ner ner! "BACK THE FUCK UP!" Bwahahah! XD)

I find this far more amusing than I should.

    The Ignorant White Guy Chronicles

Toastyfrog's account of a Christmas trip to Japan. This further convinces me that Jeremy is the James Lileks of the gaming world.
  • And tighten your buttocks / pour juice on your chin / I promised my girlfriend I'd play the violin 2002-03-11 15:41:39 [This is a repost of this morning's entry - I gave a link to an artist's site after only perusing the sketches, and not realizing till later how incredibly over-the-top-yaoi-sweaty-shouta-sex-riffic the main gallery was. Sorry. ::blush:: The link to KYMG is mostly safe.]

    BOOOOOWWWWLLLLEEEEEERRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!1@
::smacks you around a bit with a Bristol pad::

DUDE. Your work was BOUGHT by someone and it's being HUNG in a PUBLIC PLACE. Most artists I know would flip to have that kind of thing happen to them. You're a more skilled than some folks I could name who've had their work professionally published.

    OK, I'm done chastising.

But seriously, dude, if you have creative drive, follow it! If you have the urge to create, create. If you stifle that, it'll eat you from the inside out.
I understand how hard it is to follow through with that when you're discouraged. I've been skirting the edge of giving up (on AMVs) myself lately.
I guess you just have to sit and ask youself why you want to create. Do you do it out of obligation? Love? Gratitude? Just for fun? All three? When you figure out WHY you want to create artwork, forget that reason and keep drawing anyway. Draw until it's not fun anymore, then stop. Pick up the pencil again when you get the urge.

Because if you quit drawing, I'll smack you with my Bristol pad when I see you in April.
At which point that Big Fat Kill pic will fall out and I'll suddenly remember to give it to you.
And then we'll go have a beer and talk about fun things of no grand consequence.

Where was I going with this?

    Uh, anyway.

This weekend I picked up the VHD:Bloodlust DVD, which I haven't seen yet, Bebop manga issue 2 in English (good god, Tokyopop publishing something with actual comic lettering AND a decent translation? The end is near!), Bebop anime guide (ahh, well, they compensate with piss-poor offset printing. Guess the apocalypse is distant once again...), and Big O manga issue 1.
Nothing terribly impressive in the whole bunch. Big O manga reminds me of Steam Detectives, especially because Roger looks like a very young, tall boy.

Some really twisted but gorgeously done artwork. Check out the GIF animations - they're incredible. (I LOVE the "Little Match Girl" short.)
