MCWagner: MOUSE RAGE. Sounds like Fuujin from FF8.
I forgot to mention that I really enjoyed "The Emperor's New Groove". I had no intentions of seeing it until one night after I'd quit a hellish web-sweatshop job, and was desperately in need of some lighthearted comedy. Brett went with me... we loved it. It was like an extended madcap Warner Brothers short. The timing in the gags was excellent.
And, of course, Patrick Warburton.
And there's only ONE song, and it's by Tom Jones.
Not a masterpiece, but it is loads of silly fun. Eartha Kitt rocks the house as the villain.
Definitely worth a rental, but be warned - the DVD menus are completely irritating.

MCWagner: Don Bluth did Anastasia? Huh - I thought that was just done by the WB animation team. Cool beans. I dug that film except for the ending sequence, the songs, and that obnoxious bat critter.
Re: The Last Unicorn - The reason(s) I didn't like it... well, so many of my friends had seen it as kids, and they kept talking about how wonderful and beautiful it was, and how moving... I was all hyped up and ready to see this incredible masterpiece.
Well, when I saw it for the first time at age 21, I saw jerky animation, heard pitiful voice acting (although Angela Lansbury did a smash-up job), and tried to follow a story that seemed to be consuming itself and/or wallowing in pointlessness. What was with that skeleton? THAT's comic relief? Sheesh.
I'll give it this: the color design was quite good, and I liked the stylized backgrounds, and the song "Man's Road". (Which I actually associate more with GotF now because of Lee's video.)
I found the Secret of NIMH to be more tolerable than Bluth's other work. The spotty animation bothered me UNTIL I noticed how scant the animation crew was in the credits (at which point I was like, "holy crap! They made this movie with THAT FEW PEOPLE?!"). I was pretty impressed with the rats' society and the final conflict, but the whole medallion thing struck me as trite, and the "auntie" character seemed to serve no purpose other than a minor irritant. The crow didn't have much of a point, but he served as decent comic relief, so I can overlook that.
Please remember I saw NIMH for the first time.. oh... about 3 months ago.
Actually, that's not true. I saw it when I was 11, but I was so taken over by the flu that all I remembered was the owl.
Anyway, I liked the voice-acting in this film EXCEPT for Mrs. Brisby. It just didn't feel genuine to me. John Carradine rocked pretty hardcore, though.
One thing I REALLY liked about NIMH: the fact that when Mrs. B. ran, she ran as a mouse does - she may talk and wear clothes like your average anthropomorphized cartoon, but she MOVED like a mouse. That was a very nice touch.
"American Tail", however, I DID see in theatres at age 9, and loved it to pieces. Saw it again at age 22, and noticed a few bright spots, but they seemed to be drowned in a lot of gratuitous cheese (Fievel encountering the bullies, the "we just met, now let's sing a song about what good pals we are" sequence with the cat...)
I can forgive animated musicals IF the songs serve to forward the story, or even some minor plot point which the songs in "Tail" didn't, really. For example, in "The Little Mermaid", Ariel's songs (while they're still pretty fucking cheesy) help illustrate her situation and her surroundings. I can deal with that. A break in the story to sing "we're a duuuu-o"... sorry, no dice.
Haven't seen "Titan A.E." or "Cool World" (isn't that Bakshi?)... saw "Land Before Time" at age 10 or 11, but even then it struck me as overly sappy. I can't take intentionally cute characters. Boo from "Monsters, Inc" is cute. A cloying false baby-voiced pastel-colored dino... makes me want to hurl. (Obviously haven't seen any of the LBT sequels.)
The case for "All Dogs" was about the same as it was for "Tail". Loved it when I was young, watched it again after 20 and was appalled. (The same went for "Oliver and Company" - what a wreck of a movie that was.)
I've got high hopes for "Lilo and Stitch". I hope Disney can prove that American 2-D animation is still viable... because PIXAR's been kicking Disney's animated arse for the past, oh, five years or so.
Just for reference, my favorite American animated films from the past 10 years have been: "A Bug's Life" (tightest story construction EVAR), "Monsters, Inc." (most imaginative thing I've seen in theatres in a long time) and "The Iron Giant" (which just owns all, period.).
Disney films have been fun diversions, but not much else. Though "Tarzan" did give me a mighty lust for Corel Painter 3D.

baby come back / you can blame it all on me

Hsien: That same scene is parodied excellently in "Safe Men" - except the song coming out of the boom box is "Baby Come Back".
Sweet 'stache, bro.
Thanks, man.
Has anyone else seen this movie?
Anyway, dude, I just emailed (Duke and Hotmail) you the location of that Spiritualized Mp3. Let me know if you like it; I ripped 2 more this morning and they're sitting here on my hard drive.
