  • Your hands and feet are mangoes / you're gonna be a genius anyway 2001-11-02 11:20:55 Stupid apartment manager.
My copy of the September Newtype - as well as Trigun manga 1 & 2 and Cowboy Bebop manga 1 - had been sitting in the office since October 17. Stupid Apartment Manager never gave me a delivery notice. I didn't even know it was in till I called Nikaku to see if it had been sent.

    Anyway.

Bebop manga 1 is pretty good - Yutaka was still getting the hang of drawing the characters, so they look even MORE odd than in vols. 2 and 3 (what is WITH all the poofy lips and big shoujo eyes?!), but the stories, as usual, are a hoot.
In one story, Spike gets drunk & unruly in a restaurant and
    -- gets arrested and
-- subjected to a strip & cavity search (thankfully, the curtain of charity was drawn on that scene >_<) and
    -- taken to jail, where
-- he narrowly misses becoming Andre the Giant's bitch, but
-- ends up being a love interest for a drag queen, who insists on calling him "Lee".

    Fucking awesome.
While I'm not terribly fond of Yutaka's interpretation of the characters, she is the MASTER of the deadpan "ummmm, excuse me, WHAT?" face.

I'm really pleased with the Trigun manga so far. The character designs are a lot more rough and gritty in the manga. I like it! The thick, chunky lines are a plus, too. I'm about halfway through volume 1.

Newtype was SWEET. I got it for Bebop movie coverage, but it also had a big Noir "photo book" and an old-school Gundam poster with art by Yas. Delicious.

And that image on page 16... Hoowah. O_O *cough*

Got an idea for a Lupin/Phish video, but need source :/
    Phish.
Memories of 32-oz bottles of OE800, drunk in celebration of finishing exams or just because I'm broke... "Picture of Nectar" and "Hoist" were the albums we'd play out of Chris's crappy car stereo in the middle of January, with the windows rolled down in the garage so we could hear, freezing our asses off and sitting in a circle telling dumb jokes...
Phish. Give the director a serpent deflector, a viral dissector, a hormone collecter...
Hey, now that I think about it, next month'll make it 2 years since I quit smoking, and 2 years that Brett and I have been together.
    Wow, time flies.
  • There was a table set for six and five were there 2001-11-01 11:23:30 I had the WEIRDEST dream last night.
I was in the Chicano culture room here in the Union, except it was actually a room on 3rd Clara (in the girls' dorm I lived in my freshman year of college). Sanosuke from Rurouni Kenshin was in there (Just for the record, I've never watched Kenshin, and had to go to ex.org to find out Sanosuke's name) and he told me he was going to read my memories.
I lay down on the floor and he put one hand above my forehead. He started getting REALLY angry because my memory was a blank. (Apparently I'd been trained as a highly skilled assassin, then had my personal memories erased, leaving only my combat skills.) In his frustration, he drew a katana and held the tip at my throat. I automatically drew mine and instantly killed him, almost as a reflex.
When I stood, I saw that I was clothed in light, loose Japanese-style garments. I wiped the blood off my sword on my pants.
Soon, the room was full of people. The body was gone, but my clothes were still bloody. I hid behind a door so no one would see my clothes and know I'd just killed a man.
Brett came in after the crowd had dispersed a bit. I pulled him aside and whispered, "I just killed someone in self-defense, but I don't think I can get off on that plea. Will you help me escape?"

    Then I woke up.
    Weird, huh?

Brett dreamed that the old farmer man from "Babe" was trying to bop him on the head with a car battery. That's hilarious ^^
  • pass the dutchie on the left hand side 2001-10-31 16:30:52 Did I mention I have NOTHING to do today?

    http://www.big-big-truck.com/bebop/spike-hirschfeld.gif

I used the same ink technique that Hirschfeld uses on this thing... good god, my hand hurts. How can he have been drawing like that for the past 70 years?!
