JOURNAL: Big Big Truck (E K)

  • the photograph on the dashboard / taken years ago 2001-11-29 23:46:40 Many thanks to everybody who answered my just-curious questions. It's been really intriguing to read your responses and see how creative audiovisual ideas differ from person to person.
As for me, when listening to music, I see colors, forms, and landscapes. For example, Dire Straits' "Your Latest Trick" makes me think of a deserted harbor on a rainy night, and Deep Forest's "Freedom Cry" just calls to mind warm colors, spheres, and spiralling helix shapes.

I agree with whoever said that pop music doesn't make them see much at all. Britney Spears, Destiny's Child, etc. just make me think of sparkly shiny blips, but not much else.

Got linked from this site today: http://www.phancy.com Go there! It's hella fun. Watch the "lambhat.mov" short! (Listed above the Nov 27 entry) It's a hoot.
He also runs www.punkasspunk.com, which is the best name for a site ever.

BTW, this entry's subj header is from "Nightswimming", my favorite R.E.M. song. I'm sad that I'll never get to do a video to it... unless someone makes an anime with bizarrely appropriate footage.
  • I have a secret that will not keep / I wanna brush your teeth 2001-11-29 11:22:31 It's SNOWING.

Not for long, though - the sky off to the west is blue and growing brighter by the minute.
Still, it was a nice way to start the morning. Snow may be a commonplace occurrence for most of the nation, but in Central Texas it's about as rare as an 80's movie where Anthony Michael Hall gets laid.

Here's two questions for all you AMV types out there:

    1. Ever get a really great AMV idea that suits an anime perfectly... EXCEPT that there's not enough footage for your theme/idea?
I desperately want to do an End of Eva AMV to Peter Gabriel's "Blood of Eden", but the amount of "warm and calm" footage in that movie is so minute that it makes it almost impossible.
Same for the Bebop/"Fare thee Well" idea. I read a fanfic that quoted that song and was KICKING myself for not thinking of it first... until I realized there was no way to sustain that very specific melancholy feel for the entire duration of the song. (The closest thing I can think of is Kwasek's "Only In Dreams" video. Except that "Fare Thee Well" couldn't use any of the action-oriented footage.)
I'm seriously thinking about drawing original art or manipulating production art to use in my next video (which is neither Bebop nor Eva), just to avoid the "not enough animation" trap. It's going to kill me... arrggh.

    2. Since you got started making music videos, do you often think of music as accompaniment to daily actions, weather, moods, etc? (Or am I just a freak?) Seriously, though, depending on what the weather is and how traffic is moving on my morning commute, I'll listen to different music. Today was overcast and spitting snow, traffic was light, and everyone had their lights on. Well, then, it's time for R.E.M.'s "Automatic for the People", "Drive" in particular.
There are certain types of music I prefer to listen to when reading and writing, and certain types I prefer when at work or driving for pleasure. (I don't like music when I run or work out.) There are certain types that go well with certain places, like restaurants (say, Double Dave's Pizza vs. Sardine Rouge vs. Ocean's 11).
Does music make images and forms spring into your mind? Colors? Shapes? Temperatures? Emotions?
If anybody wants to respond, I'm looking forward to hearing what you have to say. :-)

In other news, I finished that Vincent pic:

I'm really not too happy with it, though. The background I made is all wrong - at the wrong angle, and I should have made the buildings closer in and more industrial looking.
    Ah well, live and learn.
  • you don't have to do what your mother has done 2001-11-28 14:22:09 MCWagner: it was the one where Batman was pursuing the ruby thieves while having to take care of an egg-baby for his family sciences class. Kooky stuff.

  • I'm so tired of playing with this bow and arrow 2001-11-27 22:35:19 Two new pics today:

    http://www.big-big-truck.com/sketch/vinbkgdsm.jpg
which is going to be blurred all to hell and used as the background for the Vincent pic I'm doing for Asari...

which is a preview of part of the image, about 1/3 of the way done.

Bleh. Kill me next time I try to CG something that complicated.
