Try not to be too harsh on the op...actually, scratch that. Be harsh. I'm not afraid of criticism, and I know I have a ways to go--hearing other people's opinions is one thing which helps me improve (the other being watching other people's videos...it not only gives me inspiration, but gives me a chance to examine what works and what doesn't iwthout the emotional attachment that goes with my own work).
I haven't had much chance to work with Vegas yet, but I already find it much easier to edit with. And I've barely even looked at effects (I'm not an effects heavy editor, probably partially coming from using WMM on my last four vids, but I don't think any of them suffered from that, although they did suffer from lack of experience on my part, especially the first two). I did *ahem* borrow Premiere from a friend once a couple years ago--I couldn't make heads or tales of it. With Vegas, I at least have a manual and an in-program tutorial I can look at--the latter is more helpful actually, and it's probably a good thing I'm trying the cheap version, since the full doesn't have it. I like the layout a little better too, compared to Premiere. I do have a Premiere Elements trial coming via mail, but I doubt I'll bother to even install it. This video will probably use a fair amount of effects, compared to my earlier stuff, and I'm a little worried about going overboard...here's hoping.
One last note--drop the 'e' on the end of my name. Please. It doesn't bother me much, but I have no idea why so many people feel compelled to add one :/

On WMM

Since this appears to be a topic of conversation in a couple of other journals., I figured I'd weigh in--especially since it's a bit of a sore topic for me, given that until recently this has been the only editing program I've had access to (I'm still not sure I can justify buying VMS right now, but I refuse to fight with WMM any more).
I side with the group that says that it's the editor, not the program. Granted, most people who care will move up to something more powerful at some point--as you should already know I'm in the middle of that process myself. But even with the cost of video editors coming down to something much more reasonable, if you're broke you're broke, and WMM is nice and free, and easy to learn.
I know WMM tends to get equated with young girls and Sailor Moon vids, or young boys and LinkenBall Z--not without justification either (Hell, that's how I got into this--"Hey, neat, I have a video editor. let's make a Sailor Moon video!" Oy what a headache that was...and the result gives me headaches to watch it today). But isn't that kinda of like saying that all SM vids are bad, or all DBZ-Linken Park vids are bad? I've seen good examples in both categories. In the end, it's not the raw materials that counts, it's what the person does with them. WMM is a PITA to use--once you have the basics down any other editor would probably be easier to work with. But that doesn't mean that someone who's determined can't create good things with it. For an example, look at Deathscythe_Animated's "Heaven Coming Down" video...it's not a great video by any means, but it's not bad either, and I rather enjoy it.
There will tend to be less crap coming out of more powerful programs--that's because the people who use them tend to be 1) more experienced and 2) care more about making quality. But the people making crappy WMM vids would probably be just as bad in Premiere or Vegas--actually, probably worse, because there's so many more effects at their disposal to throw into a video. (Of course, that's assuming they have the patience to learn to work the programs)
Wow, that's longer than I thought it would be. If you made it this far, congrats.

Finally got (most of) my footage ready to go, my audio is ready, and I finally installed Vegas Movie Studio. My thoughts so far? Well.....lets just say I found the fade button :D
I'm still not sure how this video is going to turn out--it's going to be a much stricter lyric sync than I've ever done. But, that's why I picked this song--it fits so very well to the story I'm re-telling. But I am enjoying the new software, especially the ability to leave blank spots on my timeline. I'm barely into the video (less than 30 secs) but I'm already enjoying the extra capabilities. And it's so much easier than WMM to do editing in. I remember swooning when I saw Final Cut Pro used for the first time...while I realise there's still a lot that's outside my grasp as far as video editing goes, I want to learn as much as I can. I really enjoy this.

Wheee, editor!

I went looking at the Premiere Elements and Vegas Movie Studio trials yesterday, and found out two good things
1) Adobe will send out Premiere Elements trials on DVD. It should be here in a month or so.
2) The Vegas trial is only 66 megs (I was expecting it to be larger). Given that I can download a 10 megs file in about an hour to an hour and a half, that makes it the perfect size for an overnight download (my dial-up connection is extremely stable).
So the Vegas trial is on my desktop ready to install--once I get Sailor Moon ripped and encoded I'll install it and give it a whirl. I can't wait to get started!
