JOURNAL: pen-pen2002 (Søren Berg)

  • Goodbye Phade 2004-06-02 14:21:00 Well Phade is leaving. Bummer. Of course I'm happy for him but at the same time it's such a shock. I don't think of myself as oldschool or anything, but at the same time I remember when people still used VCRs, when hosting was a major issue, when when people didn't have blazing fast internet connections. AMV's have grown tremendouly over the years and a lot of the tanks goes to one man...

    To Phade:

I've been watching AMV's for a long, long, time and through it all you were always in the background, nurturing this hobby.

Someday, someone will mention the your name and no one will reconize it. I will be watching and I will tell them of the man who created a catolog to organize AMV's and a ranking system to sort them. The man who created a forum for people to share ideas and make freinds, the man who pushed for the golden doughnut and made it happen when it seemed like even the dangling carrot was a utopian dream. I hope you stop by from time to time but even if you don't, you will be gone but not forgotten.

This hobby becomes more and more popular and I can think of three overarching reasons: The rise of non-linier editing, the growth of the internet, and you, Kris McCormic.

So long and thanks for all the memories.
  • The joy of setting up an FTP 2004-05-29 18:55:04 And yet another piece of evidence that God hates me:

So the FTP for the project I’m in (Instrumentality: Fantasia) goes down right after a number of people upload new WIPs. At first I wait patiently, but after six days I decide to take action!

I decide to host the FTP on my own computer.

Of course I know nothing about FTPs so I spend an hour or two researching on the web. After that I spend a while finding a program, only to discover it was under my nose the whole time. No biggie though, the program is soon installed and I am up and running... Or so I thought.

The first thing I do is give out the IP address that designates "whatever computer you are on, at the moment" (127.0.0.1) and thereby look like a total n00b. Then I forget to check show subdirectories, and I think I misspelled the password.

Finally it is all up and working...

And the original FTP goes back up! Within hours!!!

    Video is almost done...

    Really.

  • Otakon 2004-05-24 02:36:53 My bid for Otakon fame and glory:

Well it's Friday (the 14th) and I've just finished my last final. I book a train ticket home and begin to pack when I decide to check the boards.

Lo and behold, the Otakon deadline has been pushed back until Monday, just enough time to submit my latest video! ...Or so I thought. The video was not quite finished and I was traveling all Saturday.

    So here's the plan:

Pack on Friday night, leave sat morning. Finish the video _on the train_ mail out submission form during two hour layover in Chicago, export and compress on Sunday and upload on Monday.

    Here's What happened:

Stayed up till 6 AM packing. Slept in an hour too long (got up at 8 instead of 7) and had to get my roommate to put my stuff in storage. Raced to the train station got there 15 short minutes ahead of departure time... Train is two hours late. Also had no electrical sockets so I run out of batteries on my comp. The conductor tells me I have two much luggage and they might not let me on the train in Chicago (worryworryworryworry) Chicago train also has no sockets. I fall asleep. Sleep most of Sunday, get up Monday and forfeit dreams of fame and glory.

Well there's always Globocide (if the vid were any darker it would be a black hole.)

    Video: 95% (go perfectionists!)

  • What a day... 2004-05-08 21:31:32 First off, I am so tired I want to just go to bed... at 8:30.

One of my hobbies is sword fighting. I belong to Belegarth/Dagohir, (different national organizations, same sport) which is a medieval combat group that allows you to fight others with padded weapons such as swords, bows, spears, etc. I just finished fighting for about 7 hours today at an event that drew over 150 people from 4 or 5 states. So I am dead tired.

So I figure my day is about over right? Well turns out it wasn't crazy enough. I check my PMs to find a review of my beta that said (among other things):

    Quote:
Well my first thought is that your gonna clean up at any con you go to

    ....

That said this is an easy 5 star video, and the video to beat at ANY con.
    /Quote

Well needles to say this blew me away. I don't thinks it's true mind you, but just the fact that someone would say it just blows my mind. Man, I don't know what to think. I hope my other beta testers get back to me soon to put it in perspective, wow. I wasn't even planning to enter it into a con. Well I was thinking about Globocide's video contest because it's a different kind of dark video than you usually see, but I wasn't expecting to win or anything.

Oh well, time to go to the party.

  • beta finished 2004-05-03 23:12:50 Finally finished the full-length beta and it feels great. For those of you reading this who don't know what I'm referring to (probably no one) I'm working on an AMV titled "Requiem for a Nightmare" which uses footage from Memories: Magnetic Rose and the song Requiem for a Dream. It's a very dark mood video and parts of it came out exceptionally well. The only thing that's left is to find some beta testers and polish it up. All the people I owe opinions to I'm finally going to get to them now as I want to have a (semi) clean slate when I release the video so I can do an op exchange. School isn't very fun right now but I'm hanging in there. As soon as it and my video are finished I hope to start a new instrumental video, hopefully a jazz song of some kind. It might even be *gasp* happy (which would be new for me.) Hopefully something from Abe or Miyazaki. A number of people on the project have had setbacks, the worst in my mind is the postponement of Otohiko’s "Sailor's Tale" due to lack of CB footage, I was really looking forward to that one. Good luck working those out guys.
