Tori (Beyond the Clouds) [+subs]

Post by Otohiko » Sun May 20, 2007 2:30 am

Good morning hippies,

Image

So, one day I watched this film and, with my own reflections and nostalgia in mind, decided to try and make it into an AMV. Along the way, I had picked up an inspiring novel, which drove me along to finish it and present it as...

(edit - subs now available here: http://tinyurl.com/2uh3qk)

It's a fairly expectable video to this movie, if with Russian acoustic rock. I chose the music because it spoke to me and spoke to my impressions of the movie. I don't think I'd be able to make an AMV to this with a song in any other language but my own native tongue.

Translated lyrics are available on the description page (I thought of making subs, decided against it). There is also a whole lot of useless info there discussing the background, ideas and sources surrounding this video.

It's a personal project that I started for my own reasons and wasn't even sure if I should release, originally. This comment sums up what I think a lot of people's reaction to it will be:

I really didn't make this video with a wider audience in mind. Despite that, I certainly pulled my hardest editing effort yet on the video, which I think is reflected in the way it's synched. I also tried to get it to look as good as I can, and even made a foray into .mp4 encoding for the first time (and had my share of causeless snafus along the way).

All that said, those interested can hopefully check it out and enjoy it! Thanks for watching.

Also, endless thanks to Jasper and Orwell, for both encouranging me and tearing my betas apart repeatedly and thus making sure I wouldn't lapse into apathy or ditch this project :P

Cheers, etc.

(PS - this is the last time I do a video with such a conventionally-structured song. Damn, these things are much harder to work with than they sound!)

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

I have a very good feeling about this video, based on your description. I'll report back tomorrow ;)

EDIT: Awesome. Loved it. I even saw something of an alternate storyline going, but maybe that was just me. The last minute or so was especially spectacular. This is top-notch stuff, my only complaint is that you overdid the blur-transitions...other than that I thoroughly enjoyed it. 5/5, nice work

You realize this means I'm going to have to insult it if for no other reason than to keep people from getting the idea that I might occasionally be nice, or at least non-flaming? I'll have to think up something later when I'm not minutes away from going to bed.

To clarify slightly though, I didn't particularly like it because I almost never like sentimental type drama videos regardless of how well they're done. I suspect people who do like those type of videos will enjoy this. It's probably the closest I've ever seen Otohiko do to a 'normal' video. So don't let his 'no one will like this' act dissuade you from downloading.

I enjoyed this video :).

The scene transitions matched the audio perfectly in my opinion. Despite the fact that I did not understand the lyrics, I definitely felt a theme to the edits in relation to different parts of the song. I usually have trouble watching videos set to songs in a language I do not understand, because it's difficult for me to place relation of the lyrics with the video. Your video though, seems like an exception. It's as if the audio/visuals told the story with enough weight that my understanding of the lyrics was unnecessary.

The only thing stopping me from rating it perfectly is more of an issue concerning myself (My inability to attach to the lyrics), rather than the editing and concept of the video itself (which are excellent.) Barring that, it's a great video.

One of the most aesthetically pleasing videos I've ever seen. It's even better when you understand the lyrics. I made a crudely timed subtitles file (.srt) from your translation which I can post, if you don't mind.

russian is win, i love that language for some reason :p

just yesterday I saw this movie for the first time because of all the AMVs out there dedicated to it (and I even had a dream about trains thanks to it heh) so this is the first time I can comment on a video using this movie with having seen the actual source.

overall the video flowed very nicely and it definately reflected the mood of the song but somehow y'know I'm starting to feel that there's so much more that could be done with this footage than just retelling the story and making it a tribute to the movie. I mean that's really ok, nothing wrong with that but I'm starting to feel the need for some strange out of context video using this source, something with more color adjustments/manipulation or backwards clips or alternative storylines. You definately did the movie itself justice, it's just that I probably won't be able to enjoy anymore plain and simple videos with this source by now.

Hrmmm. My download went funny around 60%, so I've watched what I can, and I shall redownload. From what I've seen I've quite enjoyed it, although the dripping coffee pot gives me a burning desire to pee.

I'll update when it re-downloads.

Edit: Quite enjoyed the full video. I think you did the best you could with the limited footage in terms of the song length, and I liked the 'eery' feeling/sound at the ending. Yeh, the ending was neat. I feel it worth mentioning however, that before watching the full video I had indeed vented my bladder of all fluids, but once that coffee pot bit came back up I needed to pee all over again.

4/5  . and because i'm not gonna type it all again, heres some copypasta
<Minion> couldn't understand the lyrics, but it thought it was interesting. i still question otohiko's ability to distinguish singing from whining. havn't seen beyond the clouds before either. none the less though, i enjoyed it. it's consistent with what he usually makes. i'd like to see him try something totally different though
and to be fair, i'll include this:

<Tono_Fyr> you've seen his Saxon vid, right?
<Minion> probably
<Minion> can't recall
<Minion> it was different?
<Tono_Fyr> it was very much an actionvideo
<Tono_Fyr> good deal less cerebral than his normal stuff
KioAtWork: I'm so bored. I don't have class again for another half hour.
Minion: masturbate into someones desk and giggle about it for the remaining 28 minutes
