Editing DivX and Xvid files

Post by Pikadrew » Tue May 24, 2005 7:43 am

Alright, so I'm new to this whole cuommunity and I need to make a music video for a final project for one of my classes. I decided to make an nice lil amv for my unsuspecting class. My first (and really only) problem is this. I have a crapton of anime on my hdd in divx and xvid format and I cannot take them into any editing software. Do I have to convert all these files into something nicer like mpeg or mov so the programs can understand or is there just something I'm missing here?

oh..and ideally I need to be editing this in Final Cut Pro. but if you guys tell me an answer that involves premiere or some such...well...it's hard to know exactly what program a finished movie was made in, isn't it?

First off, Divx and Xvid aren't editable codecs, so don't be surprised about them not working on your program.

In a nutshell: what you can do is open your files in a program like VirtualDubMod, convert them with a lossless codec (what I use myself is HuffYUV), and use the resulting files in your editing software. Said files will likely be huge, but that's the price to pay.

The guides linked in the posts above will explain you exactly how to do that. They're really useful :)

Some programs (not premier) work fine with lossy codecs. Try importing the vids in FC and editing with them. If things look fine and error free after half an hour (do a quick export as well) you should be ok to edit with divx/xvid. Just watch for the divx logo.
