“Conservatives” Vs “Liberals”
I’m starting to see a definite rift forming here on the Org.
The “conservatives”, being the editors that stick to lets say the AMV bible, nothing flashy just basic editing, etc. I have no problem with simple videos some of my favorite come from the “conservatives”.
The “liberals”, being the effect users, people who make things go flash, flash. (I believe I fit in this category.)
I am also aware of those who do a little of both, and to you pick a side. (neutrals)
Now what I have a problem with is people commenting on some of my videos as not focusing on the anime. I was not aware that was a prerequisite for making a video. I thought the purpose was far more basic than that. Do you not watch AMVs to be entertained? Does it always have to be a tearjerker?
Some people are like; “I would have removed just about every effect in the video, there nothing but distractions”. I’m like if I were to do that I would not have made the video at all.
Is this all in my head, are there not armies preparing for battle?
What catagory do you fit in?

can i be a nihlist and say calm the fuck down, it's only cartoons?
everyone has their preferences. It's all in your head as i see. good videos can be made with or without effects, as bad ones normally are.
don't give it political titles. that gives it the assumption that there is serious shit about effects, and as far as i see, there isn't. if there is a serious thing about this, i'm just going to be laughing so hard at you all.

A Lot of the above is satire. I just thought it would make a good conversation. I am not trying to form a conspiracy.Bulghod wrote:can i be a nihlist and say calm the fuck down, it's only cartoons?

Personally, I am in the conservative category, but only partially by preference - I have no effects software. In general, I do dislike effects videos. That's not to say I don't review them fairly. It's my belief that if you impress someone who hates your work going in, you've done a good job.
It works both ways, really. "OMG, there's no effects in his vid? What did he do, slap together a few minute long segments of fansubs to a linkin park track?" "Oh goody! Happy Seizure Time!"
I rate effects on 3 things:
1) cheese factor
Does it belong there? Do you really need that starwipe there? Should that floating head be glowing that brightly?
2) Subtlety
Can you imagine the effect not being there? Does it seem weird? Or did you merge widescreen and fullscreen footage, and decide to make the black bars flash repeatedly (yes, I've seen this. it was awful)
3) quality
Did they spend a good deal of time on the effect? If it is a mostly effects video (like some dance videos for example) did they use the effects to convey the feeling of the music?
Finally, this is a personal one, but I grade based on use of color. This is due to my color blindles. If you put text in the video, and it's impossible to read, I take points off.

AMVs that I have made:
Berserk - The Fight Must Go On - Drama, Action, Violent, Story
Teenage Cowboy Bebop Turtles(TCBT) - Fun, Trailer, Parody

Too much politics. >.< I'm a sometimes extreme liberal in everything I do (out there, excessive-compulsive, anything goes, don't like it go hide your eyes, I'll do what I want so sod off). But by your definition I'm a conservative amv fan. The contradiction festers in my head.
There are some videos that are dripping with effects, literally oozing from every pixel with some blinding confusing mindnumbing addition to the anime background - videos your 'liberals' would love and us 'conservatives' would hate. But I these, the 'some' are amvs I love to death. Why? Because they feature my favorite anime characters, or my favorite songs, or because the effects are stylized in a coded way that doesn't hurt my head when I see it all spinning into itself in time with the beats. Some, those rare few, manage to drag me kicking and screaming into fangirl mode.
That would make me a 'neutral', right?
But those amvs are few and far between.
I watch amvs primarily for the anime, secondly for the music, lastly for the 'video' - which is where 'effects that have nothing to do with anime or music' fall. I don't watch videos (aka, effects) without some anime and music in there. So yes, if the 'video' distracts from the anime, it's not an 'anime video', it's a 'music video.' I don't watch mtv because I'm not a fan of music videos.
It's not that I hate effects. It's that I like anime more than effects. If given the choice of anime or effects, I choose anime.
Sure, I'll mix them if it makes me like the anime more, and I'll enjoy vids that use the effects to make the anime cooler to watch. But it seems hard for people to mix the two without the effects coming out on top. So I leave those be and watch vids where the anime comes out on top instead.
It's not that I'm conservative - I'm not that old, and I don't particularly like most of the 'classic' amvs anymore than I like the new effects amvs. I just sift through the masses and jump on the ones that have the most anime. Those happen to fall into your 'conservative' definition.
I'm not at war, I'm selfish. I want anime, so that's what I watch, and that's what I make. I don't care if those who love effects get wilder as time goes on - so long as there are still videos with mostly anime as the footage, I'm happy doing my own thing.

On a related note, talking politics on this forum is a joke seeing as how 99% of everyone here is under 30 years old and a liberal. This is an ANIME forum for christ sake.
"Do you hate Bush? Me Too!"
But to stir the pot let me say (going on the definitions that you placed in the thread) that "conservitive" editors usually are conservitive because they found something that works and that "liberal" editors are liberal because they suck at actual "editing" and need to get by on "other things".
