Turn Your Head (Asuka Langley Soryu / Evangelion AMV)

Post by Kyapture » Fri Jul 05, 2024 1:51 pm

I decided to try my hand at making an Asuka character profile AMV! There are many in the world, but this one is mine. :)
Hope you enjoy if you check it out!

Please note there are a LOT of flashing images between 2:37-2:48! English CC also available on the embed below.

I haven't actually seen Evangelion, but I've seen a ton of AMVs with it over the years. This one was definitely pretty unique. You used a ton of scenes I haven't seen before, and the vibe was a lot different than what I was expecting. Great job :D

0:07-0:24 Pretty good intro, love how it subtly progresses from urban/interior/domestic scenes toward broader shots introducing the military vehicles. This is quite a shift in what you're depicting but it feels really smooth and natural.

0:25 Really nice use of this clip, this shot is iconic and classic and the change in the music fits it nicely

0:42 Use of native audio in this scene, and nowhere else in the AMV, might strike some people as odd but I kind of liked it. Probably effective in hooking all those viewers who expect this kind of thing but restrained enough not to offend everyone else who doesn't want their AMVs overloaded with this kind of thing.

0:51 Nice sync of the angel's arm with the vocals. Also liked the cut to black here.

1:01-1:10 The verse of the song sort of dials the energy of the music back just a touch and I thought you matched this really well with the casual content and more intimate tone of these shots.

1:19 Good lyric sync

1:25 Good internal sync with the vocals

1:28 I liked this transition.

1:35-1:38 The song takes an unexpected turn here and the motion in these shots makes for a good visual representation of that, sort of jumping out of the boundaries that we might have expected it to continue coasting through.

1:45-1:49 More good lyric sync. Maybe some of this is sort of obvious but I never feel like it's too obvious, if that makes any sense.

2:01-2:02 I don't know if I've ever seen anyone use these two shots back to back like this. They're from two different episodes but this sequence looks and feels so natural.

2:22 I liked this foot stop on the beat.

2:53 This was an effective cathartic moment, a fitting response to the 2:38-2:47 sequence

I've seen a lot of Eva AMVs that mix clips from the Rebuild films in with the original series/End of Evangelion combo that you're using here. A lot of those AMVs are good. Many are great! But I'm glad you resisted the temptation to do that, it's just nice to see a new Eva AMV with the classic sources that's content to get the most of out those sources (and insistent on pulling out all the stops to do that!) without reaching for the shinier and more immediately-appealing look of the newer films.

There's a lot of variety in the transitions, it took me more than one viewing to really appreciate how many different techniques you were using for this.

This is a really good and fun video that does a lot of different things really well.

Thank you seasons for your detailed feedback, I'm very happy you enjoyed it!

A small thing I feel compelled to point out is that 0:42 actually isn't native audio at all, it's a sound effect in the song, but I totally get that it doesn't seem that way - my partner also thought it was native when I showed him this AMV! I definitely think it could come across as odd to some people but I thought I would just roll with it since it's there.

About the lack of the Rebuilds, yes, I really wanted to try and lean in to the classic Eva 'feel' hence why the 4:3 video etc etc. The movies have some great footage but I don't think it would have lended itself well to what I had in mind. Also, one other reason not to use the Rebuilds is that:
Spoiler :
It's my understanding that the Asuka in the Rebuilds can be considered a different character altogether, but admittedly I don't remember all the details about that part of the plot.
Once again, thank you very much for watching :D
