When my denying//CHANGE video was shown in a con, compression artifacts were shown (because the notebook couldn't handle the bitrate) - which were pretty interesting. I kinda wished I had some of those on my video as it does fit the theme!

But as trying to emulate video quality of earlier technology - well, I can't really see many purposes to that, but I can see putting "other type of mistakes in videos" which do have a purpose.

See, creating hiphop beats for quite a while (but I think this is something that everybody who makes music discovers), I've discovered that sampling produce a certain atmosphere you can't create with digital instruments - or sometimes even playing them yourselves. The "cleanliness" (100% perfect sound) is something that you sometimes don't want, because it takes away the "humaniness" of it. Old records scratches, low quality samples, notes that are played somewhat too late or even off, volumes differences, etc. all produce a certain "roughness" in music.

So going back to video, I think that that "roughness" can be made by producing certain effects. Even though old movie effects (dirt, scratches, etc.) are the first thing you might think of, I more think of something else: cinematographic things. Instable camera positions (really small shakes), camera positions that are somewhat rotated (not parallel to the ground), overlighted or underlighted scenes, etc. would work in order to produce that "roughness".

Granted, this isn't really video limitations that get reproduced, but more like little "human mistakes", which is more interesting to do so.

At last year's ACen, I believe it was Kalium who was talking about how DrngdKreationz purposely left the interlacing in his video Olin as an effect, which is one of the several reasons I hate that video.
Fixed.

I also know at least one editor tried to create an effect we dubbed punchcarding. Imagine macroblocking and masking combined, and you have a general idea. We saw it when an xvid version mismatch between encoder and decoder gave some funky results.

So really, it's already happening.

I don't know about you, but seems like half the time I go to a theatre, it's obvious they're playing a dvd, NOT film. Interlacing there. Pixels there. etc.
X2. I Hate it when i pay 12 bucks to see a movie and i notice grain and interlacing >: (
Mostly it's in the advertisements, but still...

More likely than not they are running digital projectors with satellite feeds. My theater I used to work at just started doing that and the picture quality (touted as "HD") is far blurrier than film stock on big screens. And very easy to pirate, mind you.

Not to mention they put me out of a damn projectionist job.

Once we start making videos into 4D holographic floating image things, then we'll be adding all that crap for nostalgia. Or, in, what, 5 years or so?
