There's always TIFF as well.

Since your first question was answered, I'll try to answer your second one.

From what I understand, you want a small image that fits in the corner of the screen and the rest to be clear and transparent. I would have to think that you delete all the information on the layer that has 0% opacity. Or delete that layer entirely and create a new layer and not fill it with color. Save the file as a PSD and import it into Premier. Premier will ask you what layer you wnat to ipmort from the file and pick the layer that is 100% opacity. As long as the dimensions of the PSD file match the dimensions of your project you will be fine.
