I'm not sure if you really need to go AU to prove the point though. jasper-isis's
Frost & Flames is a good example of a non-dance KS video (which premiered around the same time as Det-chan's).
I don't think creativity is so important that if you hear a song and see an anime and go "that fits so well together!" you should automatically think "crappy video". As this week's video showed; solid editing and pacing can make you pull off your concept, it's not an automatic win. I think we only view it as a negative because so many people think it is.

Series context is a hard thing to argue. I've noticed the trend in AMVs is to discourage requiring series context, and the ultimate result is the 'various' videos. If you look at other video communities, like vidding (doing videos to live action NA TV), it is very rare to find well done videos there which do not require series context.
Unfortunately most of us have not seen Kaleido Star, only G_Q I think had, and he did mention story elements in the video, although not strong (remember, it's a dance video!) I think it's unusual for a video in a dance/fun/comedy category to require context, which may be where you're coming from CrackTheSky, but if this was sentimental/drama/character profile/romance I'm thinking people would understand a lot more. Plus there are so many anime that people make videos to, it's hard to be interested in amv's and not see videos for anime's you've never seen. If AMV Announcements is any indication using an anime nobody has seen (or a song nobody has heard/used) seems almost a positive thing in this community.
