I tend to listen to the song over and over again until I know it backwards and forwards, and let the imagery go through my mind before I make the AMV.

Mind you, this isn't the -best- way to do it, but it's what's worked for me... sorta.

Someone mentioned earlier that synching lyrics to images in a literal sense works better for commedy than for drama or action, and I have to agree.

This is a wonderful example of not following the lyric literally, but getting the 'mood' of the song:

And someone else already posted "Date Rape" as an example of the literal translation.

but what if you think that dramatic song is funny in the first place. IE

I, apparently, hate ALL types of lyrical sync to no end.

you don't have to look very far,

any wonder why Ileia is mah favorite editor?? But yeah like Date Rape it's a bit of a comedic song... but it's got substance... unlike the HATED   video... so I'd categorize it as different.

Well, it is a narrative ballad, and the video fits the humourous tone
of the song (with a not-so-humourous subject). It does as good a
job as possible editing FMA to follow what the song is saying, but
it's a bad fit. A hentai anime would have made more sense in this
case.
Now for sonething that tells an easy to understand story (and one different from the anime), and uses the idea behind the music, this might work.

It's a nice video, but the song isn't telling a story (though you are).
In fact, the story you're telling in the amv seems to me to be very
different from what the song is saying: in the former the lovers
are separated by tragedy, in the latter she's dumping a guy.

The video is fine, and there's lyric sync, but there's hardly a
discernible story. I'm thinking something more along the lines
of a three-part narrative.
Hmmm...how about this one?

I saw this touching amv quite some time ago, but the song is more
about reminiscence and not so much about a particular event
taking place. If you can read Spanish here is an example I posted
in another thread. If you don't understand Spanish it basically tells
the story of Mario and Maria: they are married, but he works nights
at a bar and she works days at the supermarket. Their schedule
is such that they rarely see each other except in the morning, when
she yearns for sex while he just wants to sleep. Act two
starts when the bar is raided by the police one evening and upon
returning home early Mario sees a couple passionately embracing
down the street where he lives. Sure enough, it's Maria and her
lover. A confrontation ensues. The final act finds Mario stabbed
to death, while the newscast that evening reports him being
assaulted by two drug addicts, an event witnessed by Maria from
within their house.

It's a simple little story, but I can't think of a single anime series
which would allow me to show this sequence of events. It might
be possible using manga, though.

So, it's AMVs with this type of narrative which I'm interested in
right now. I can't seem to find any.

Has it occurred to you that you're being overly specific? The chances of being able to match a song narrative word-for-word are pretty slim. If one is willing to accept the requisite liberties with both anime and song, then it's not so bad.
