JaCon 2007

Post by superboi » Mon Mar 26, 2007 3:31 am

I'm not running the contest, but I might be entering if I can finish b4 the deadline. Anyway, I thought this should have been a thread a few weeks ago, so I'm bringing some light to it since theres only about 19 days b4 FTP submission deadline.

Here's the specifics... http://www.jacon.org/events/amv.html

You know even if I do make this deadline, I seriously don't expect them to play it at all. Its just got controversy written all over it. But its cool if they don't. I know I wouldn't show it if I were them, but until that time its still a secrete.

hmm,
I know you aren't the one running this contest, but it seems that the rules are rather restrictive, specifically:
3 All entries must be original creations. By original, we are requiring that entries cannot have been shown or have competed in a previous AMV contest. Failure to follow this rule could result in disqualification.
4 To compete in the JACON AMV contest, all entrants must have pre-purchased a May 5, 2007, membership to JACON 2007.
but I guess if this was your hometown convention, and you were planning to go... guess might be okay

Not at all man. I'm tellin you I'm gettin disqualified for content. It doesn't even technically count as an amv, but I don't care. It's crackin the shit up out of me the more I make it, so I'm gonna finish it up. Believe me, I'm not usually like that. I just didn't really like what I saw come out of MegaCon, and I haven't for a few years now.

And about that rule #4 thing... they don't really check for that (atleast last year they didn't, and they had that rule in there then too.) Last year I didn't preregister at all. Got it all at the door, and they still let me win for best Drama with out even being sure if I was there or not. I think they figure if some1's gonna put in a submission they're gonna be there anyway, but just in case some people think differently, they put that there just to scare them into makin sure they get their ass to the AMV contest.

I wish AFO would post their rules. I'd hate to pass up on Jacon to find out my amv is going to be too long or something. Does anyone have any idea of the length limit? (if you were paying attention last year) I was planning on taking advantage of Jacon's generous 8 minutes. There are plenty of good songs that don't have AMVs made to them because they're too long. I'm actually finding myself short on space, making more cuts than I'd like to, believe it or not.

AFO ? I think last year's time limit was 8 minutes. Really though, just because you can doesn't mean you should. Sure, there are longer songs out there that aren't used as often. However, when it comes down to it, it takes an excellent editor to pull that off correctly. Trying a song of that length for your second video may be a bit much.

A great video may hold an audience's attention for 4-5 minutes, a good video for 2-3 minutes, and a mediocre video might not even manage that. But anything short of "completely amazing" is not going to stand up for a full 8 minutes. I've watched thousands of videos by this point, and I can honestly count on one hand the ones I've seen over 5 minutes that could not have used some trimming.

Longer videos can be good, no question. However, congoers have relatively short attention spans, and most of them don't respond well to drawn-out vids. In fact, most of us have desperately wished for a fast-forward button at some point during a contest. Not trying to discourage you or anything, just offering a bit of honest advice. I enjoyed your Megacon vid, and do look forward to seeing more of your work.

As for me, I'm going to try to have something for JACON this year, but it may not happen. I've got a full courseload this semester, so finding time for editing is extremely difficult. Will give it a go if I can, though.

*beams* Thanks! Yes, it is proving to be a bit much in places. I don't think they'd show the video if it wasn't going to be... well, entertaining. Would they? In the end it may be something I do for myself. I have considered editing the audio, and managed to do a seamless cut from verse1 straight to chorus2. It'd still be 6 and a half minutes running length. Hmm... suitable for a contest?

keeping it under 4 minutes would be a better option

*sigh* ... if only.

No really, I wish I could get an audience that would sit for all 8 minutes, even if it's only the last three that'll turn your brains to shit.

is there a radio version of the song at all? They usually edit those down to about 3:30 or so. If there isn't I would suggest editing the song down yourself. Personally I think 4-5 minutes should be the max for any amv. Anything above that would have to be one of those AMV Hell formatted things where u can just sit and watch for hours cuz its something new every 10 seconds.

You know alot of "1st" AMV's usually come out to be extremely long. Well its true for me and a few others I know, but after that I never attempted 7 minutes again... And I'm never showing that amv to any1 that unless I trust that person with my life, cuz it was freakin horrible.
