"Half Day Closing" Naruto + Portishead

Post by Zatoichi1800 » Fri Mar 23, 2007 4:01 pm

Had to make this AMv. Love Naruto and I couldn't get this song ("Half Day Closing" - Portishead) outta my head for days now. I was surprised I made this AMV in my slow as compu with premiere. Took me a total of 9hrs. Most of which was spent looking how to edit with xvid in premiere. I wanted to make more special effects but I am currently on a slow ass computer which I couldn't even see the simple titles and transition I made in real time. So decided to do the minimum just to get the practice. It was real fun making this AMV. I will definately be making more!

Oh please any opinions welcomed. Even if its negative. I will only get better if I know what to correct.

Thanks!!

Wow after reading the guide from PHADE I see why no one has made no replies. It sucked. I went back to premiere and began editing it once more with the suggestions from that guide. And it looks much better. I won't upload to the server here since I want it as a landmark to gauge how I used to work. If you're interested in seeing the new version go here:

Thanks for the replies.

Yeah I gonna talk to the admins to see if I reup it. I fixed some of the timings and cropped the subs out thats all.

Been working or playing how you want to see it, on my new AMV. took me 14 hrs after reading all the guides. All I have to say is wow great info. They grab you by the hand and walk you through it completely. I love the bait and switch method. so freaking cool. When I did naruto + portishead gave me fustrations cuase I was using divx for preview encoder  I was cursing my system for being to old and slow. Now with that picvideo codec it flies!!!!

Shit this is becoming addicting

So you´ve read the guides? And finaly compressed your wmv from WMM in XviD with VirtualDubMod.... while forgetting that uncompressed in an amv is bullshit (at least in my eyes, beacuse 320kbps LAME mp3 or AAC+ are quite enought).
Output a DV avi in WMM. Load it into VDM and don´t forget to compress your audio (streamlist, full processing mode).

My resumé before to get into detail: Congratulation you´ve wasted a potential song for a very good amv, but because you´ve read the guides. I don´t see there any problems why this all shouldn´t change. This were just the normal mistakes every new editor does.

-Concept
Open your eyes. Does this video fit to the song and the mood of it? No it doesn´t. There were no concept, just the "I like the song and the anime and let´s merge them together"
This song could fit with easly fit with a non effects amv with the right scences like at 02:35 and yes... also to Naruto -.-'

-Subtitles
If you don´t need subtitles... remove them. No one is interressted in them. They just disturb the flow.

-Visual Quality
bullshit. If you have DVDs. Use them! Also learn how to compress and how to work with looseless codecs and material

Work on scenepick, timing (well ok you don´t need timing with this song, but learn it), visual quality, originality (Naruto is so fucked up overused). Learn how to bring the flow and atmosphere from the song to the video.

;)
and don´t forget that boochsack isn´t meant for amvs at all.

...no one wants an amv with the filename "test.avi" on the harddrive =/

Bauzi thanks for the comments...

You're all right except for the song going with the video. If you read the lyrics its meant exactly that. The song is about how when things look their worst life continues on and not chasing our tails.

anyways, here it is fixed with great quality, timings, compressed audio and I added a few scenes extra. I removed subs, too. Looks good now. I freaking love those guides. I was able to compress great quality and higher aspect ratios in a smaller file. The original was 80MB and this one is only 23MB!! Plus the editing was super fast, no crashes or things going outta wack in the end, like I was accustomed too. I was editing before with mp3 audio damn!!!! The wav files really help looking for the beats and unique sounds.

Here you go, disect this baby

BTW

Why hasn't anyone commented on my other vid, Remordere (Dark Fury + Massive Attack)? I really worked hard on that one and I think its the best outta the other 2 AMV I made.

I´m not at colleage, but tomorrow I am. I´ll download it tommorrow.

The clue about this place is to have people that already know, or to make an amv that is superior (like Whisper of the Beast was). Be happy that you get feedback. I haven´t really got one in the first 2 weeks when I realsed my first good works and now one of it has 17 ops ^^. Well ops mean nothing but I always like to get feedback.

When nobody knows you and you come along with .wmv or .mpeg you will be marked as another new one. In specially with a naruto or a boochsack link.
The best way is to compress it the best way you can (XviD, x264) and hope that someone will post something to bring the stone roll.

If you want comments you can easily get them in the opinion exchange forum. There are often people that give detailed ops for free or as the forum said: for exchange.
I freaking love those guides.
People who are willed to read the guides and to learn are extra welcomed here ^^
So:

wtf dude i didn't know you were into Portishead...

Well anyways, I downloaded the fixed version of the Naruto video because the org can always use more editors that use trip hop for their AMVs - I guess.

There's still a few things you need to realize here Zatoichi:

1.If your AMV only takes you 1-2days it's either bullshit or you're the most talented editor on this whole website. You, like everyone else starting out, need to realize that you're not just working on a video, but rather that it's a project that some of us work a lot of months on. Now while I do think that that's a bit much for starters, a video that only takes a few hours won't let anyone else appreciate your work. And in the end, I don't think you'll be able to feel proud about anything you made in only a few days, while a really awesome video can be something great for your own self-confidence too. There are thousands of videos on this website, just like there are millions of football players and athletic heros. This is like every other hobby there's no difference, if you want to be noticed, be good. And that's most of the time hard work.

2.Effects aren't just some flashy things that pop up randomly in your or everyone elses videos. I bet you've at least seen one video on this site where you didn't even notice the effects that were there. Your atmosphere in this video was crappy because you didn't alter your footage, you didn't play with the contrast, the saturation or the levels. Those things are important if you want to match a bright colored anime like Naruto to a gloomy trip hop song like Half Day Closing. That's mainly one of the reasons why it's always better to work with a video editing software that's at least superior to WMM because it gives you enough options to change your footage around so that it does what you want it to.

3.Listen to the beat. For every beat there can be a rough cut, or a smooth transition, or an effect, or a fadeout or like a hundred other possibilities that have or haven't been invented yet. That's the physical skills you'll have to train to get better, the more you give in to the beat, the better planned out your video will look in the end. That doesn't mean that every little small beat needs to be synched, you'll just have to develop a feeling for what beats are more important to the flow of your video than others.

4.Stop when it stops being fun. Pause when you've got enough for a day and continue when you want to. You hate the encoding shit stuff? Don't do it, compressing an XVid isn't all that troubling so as long as you do that you're safe for now. If you don't like any effects don't do them, that's why there's a 'best no-fx' category in the VCAs. But you could also only concentrate on great encoding and effects. The only thing that matters is that you find out what you're best at and what's most fun for you to edit. But in order to do that you'll first have to try out everything, if you don't it's just being biased.

Yeah, I think that's about it :|
