I usually use about 25 to 30gigs for a project. I can suffice on 6 to 12gigs if I plan the vid out in advance. I like to have 60gigs available, but that doesn't happen often.

I wouldn't mind picking up another external harddrive, but I'd only use it to store things so I don't have to burn dvds as often. The only way another harddrive would affect my editing is that it would let me procrastinate more instead of cleaning my drive off every few weeks.

Here's one for the smart people. Why do my 60gig + 250gig drives add up to 288gigs in "Total Size"? What happened to the other 22gigs?

F-Disk isn't in my use and C-Disk have it's own problems so I can't trust it. G-Disk is really slow so it is just "a warehouse". ;) D & E were first planned to work together but it seems they don't like each other... But at the moment I have 506GB free space for use.

Arigatomina, I have same problem. My G-Disk is truly 500GB disk but it looks like there is just 465GB. I dunno what is with it.

There are 2 reasons your numbers don't add up.

1) Advertised sizes are often misrepresentations of data based on 1MB = 1000kB and 1GB = 1000MB where in actuality the measurement should be done in binary (2^10 = 1024). Propagate the error over the drive space and there you go. Your OS and other apps that check HDD space actually measure the drive correctly, hence the difference.

2) Formatting takes up space...

410GB internal (250 and 160) and a 400GB external. I don't know about the internals but my external has about... 150GB free.

I shall proceed with 200 gigs internal hd and 300 gb external hd.
however, threads like these are pointless.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm not a fan of penii, online or otherwise. And this wasn't intended to be just a "who's got the most" thread. I asked questions I was curious to hear the answers to. I know my friends, some who are video editors, some who are not, routinely tell me I've gone way overboard with drive space. I was wondering what other editors thought, and it seems that I'm not that unusual. Many of the editors who have posted have revealed they have more space than I do, so obviously I am neither alone nor overboard.

Nope you haven't gone overboard. In the digital editing field you can never have enough HD space .....
