and when I click custom nothing happens.

I think it would help to change the format from .mpg to .avi

Uh yeah. MPEG-1 is old and definitely not ideal. Change to .avi, and choose huffyuv or lagarith for your final render.

If you want just a temporary preview render while you're editing I suggest MJPEG.
