So newbies should see the videos which 99% of the org copies off
so that they too can copy off them? I don't think they need help
for that ;)

I'm not sure if people who start out making AMVs really need any
guidance, aside from the technical stuff. This list is shaping up to
be good, no doubt, but it's just that, a list of good AMVs. If anything
I hope newbies view them and do not imitate them, but try new
things instead.
You can learn things like timing and mood synch from good AMVs without ripping them off.

Maybe classic isn't the right word here. Perhaps semi-forgotten gems and influential videos would be better. As DWP mentioned most of these videos influenced how videos after it were made to some degree or another (which, incidentally, is why I put True Fiction in the list. It's pretty new but I'm quite sure it'll be influential. I've already seen at least one person try a cheap copy of his effects). Some of the videos weren't all that influential, they were just damn good and have gotten buried on the various lists by newer videos. So part of this is highlighting some of the old stuff.
How is this any different now than perusing the "Recommended AMVs" forum, or even the top 10?
It's different because a single person is doing the list. This won't have what the site members think should be on it, it's what *I* think should be on it. I am taking other peoples opinions into account by starting this thread of course but what I do and don't put on the list is solely my choice. You may or may not agree that I should be the one making the call but I'll note all past similar suggestions have gone no where because, in the end, no one sat down as said 'I'll do it'.

There's also a difference in motivation. I'm not out to highlight the best of the site. I'm not out to say 'This is a good Naruto video'. My goal is to highlight things a new member should see as a shining example of what AMVs can be and also to highlight things new users most likely wouldn't stumble into with existing tools. Anime choice or genre don't come into it (which makes this different than the recommended threads). Some videos already prominent in other listings will be included, you just can't make a list of influential videos without including Euphoria for example, but as you can see by the suggestions so far most of these just don't get much attention elsewhere.

Another difference, this may never get even semi-official recognition. I'm going to compile the list and send it to the admins. After that is up to them. Where or even if it goes up on the site isn't my call. At worse it'll end up as a link in my sig.
Maybe a classic AMV should be at least 10 years old.
The problem is there aren't all that many videos from before 2000 in digital format. I'm looking up the old threads about two vcr days and the like though. I'll try to list what I can of that era but in general if Caldwell didn't do it then the video doesn't exist now. Not in a format I could link to at least.
What people need
to know is that Thalawyn's (IIRC) AMV of "Wings of
Honneamise" set to "Major Tom" was good. It would be
even better if someone has it because I haven't seen that
vid since 1994.
Good example. If someone has a link to it I'll include it.

Pretty much every one of MeriC's videos, and to a lesser extent, VegettoEX's..(But I never really thought his vids were 'all that' until he started collabing with Meri).

I grew up on their videos so of course I have a bias toward them.
(but they seem to be going downhill since mid-2006. So watch the stuff before then)

I'd also like to recommend You Choose Sam,the Rest's(WuWu/YCSTR) videos.

Any of them as far as trailers go, but most notably Because I choose To for it's extensive photoshop/AE/whatever the hell that is work.

It is still probably the best crossover video(in terms of technical stuff) to date.
I mean, even the lighting is the freakin' same.

And I don't know if any of his videos are still up, but Klinky made some of the best shit I've seen.

There's some other editors I miss that have long ago quit AMVing, but I can't think of them at this particular moment...

Crap, when I mentioned Klinky, I was really only remembering this video:

It was... Interesting, to say the least. I think Klinky has a more artistic view of things than normal people. Jbone has some artistic views, but they're not as in-your-face as Klinky's?

Allright. Let's go back to the videos I saw when I got started that made me decide editing was for me...

*opens AMV drive*

I'm going to pass over all the videos already mentioned plus the ones everyone talks about. Stuff like The Aluminum Studios Senshi vids, or Tim's parodies (love me some Kakumei Card!) because they're not really "bypassed" in the same way I think the videos that inspired me are.

Although ErMaC doesn't agree with me, my favorite video, the one that really stood out to me as to what could be done by an accomplished editor, was ErMaC's first Marmalade Boy video. It's no longer uploaded, and he has destroyed every copy he can get his hands on, but I have it backed up in three different places and would be happy to share.

Title: I Can't Move On
Member: ErMaC
Studio: ErMaC Studios
Premiered: 2001-03-11
Categories: Drama, Romance
Song: Everything But The Girl "Missing"
Anime: Marmalade Boy

Utena videos really inspired me and continue to do so. My first and last videos were Utena, and I have more Utena videos than any other series. There are so many great ones from the early years, and while mine was contemporary to several of them (it premiered in 2001 on the org), I would never, ever put it in the same class. A good example of an amv that inspired me is:

Title: Trippin' On Utena
Member: Jesmaster
Studio: Jesmasters Anime Palace
Premiered: 2000-07-22
Categories: Action, Drama
Song: Stone Temple Pilots "Trippin' on a Hole in a Paper Heart"
Anime: Revolutionary Girl Utena (TV)

Finally, we have a few KOR videos. Obviously, KOR is my favorite series, and as such I pay a lot of attention to every single video that is made. Luckily, most of them, especially the early ones were made with a lot of love and attention and are great examples of chracter driven videos.

Title: One True Love
Member: rys
Studio: RYS
Premiered: 2001-12-02
Category: Romance
Song: SemiSonic "One True Love"
Anime: Kimagure Orange Road (TV)

Title: The Beginning Of The Night
Member: DavePeterson
Studio: Cracked Hoe Productions
Premiered: 2001-09-01
Categories: Character Profile Drama Romance Serious
Song: Boa "Twilight"
Anime: Kimagure Orange Road (TV)

Title: Life in Madoka
Member: Quu
Studio: OtakuVideo
Premiered: 2000-05-13
Categories: Character Profile, Drama
Song: Mono "Life in Mono"
Anime: Kimagure Orange Road (TV)

And finally, making us all feel like n00bz by editing FIFTEEN YEARS AGO:

Title: Orange Road
Member: Vlad G Pohnert
Premiered: 1993-09-01
Categories: Character, Profile, Drama
Song: Samantha Fox "I Only Wanna Be With You"
Anime: Kimagure Orange Road (TV)

I am blessed to be able to say I saw several of the videos I now consider vital at their respective premieres at various cons. I associate a lot of good memories with being in a group of editors and being able to watch "amv history" unfold. Perhaps silly, or trivial, but it is what it is. If you have trouble getting ahold of any of the videos I posted here, I have them all.

So I'm about 3/4ths done with this. I even resisted the temptation to toss in my own videos and everything. So anyone else have some suggestions before I finish?

So, the list is basically a example of classics that have already defined what amvs can be, and new videos that are expanding the current boundaries of amvs?

Something by Requiett, for representation of the more bizarre effectsy video's out there, perhaps this one?

I think Frans B. Cocq is also worthy of recognition; its excellent execution of editing to a style of music that is often hard to deal with and thus recieves little attention, compared to something with a lot of easy beats to sync to.

A AMV Hell, probably 1 or 2, should be mentioned, as they basically set a entirely new trend in the community. There may have been a few things like it before, but after they came there's been tons of them. I'd also like to suggest The Sound of Editing, but maybe it's just me who sounds like that when editing.

Before you finish, why not post your final list for people to review and see if they think anything that has been a noticable influence on the community.

This'll probably come across as asshole'ish, but are you including EVERY video listed? Frankly there are quite a few I don't agree with nor regard as "MUST WATCH" on the org. Then again, this is all personal opinion (as is your list and the suggestions), but frankly I guess I'm just an elitist and think the list should be fairly short.
