Sick of the whole AMV thing?

I've dealt with hackerzc in his role as an AMV coordinator
and it was a pleasant experience. It'd be a pity if his
increasing disinterest in AMVs translated into leaving
the scene completely. If he's bored it's his prerogative
to stop, but I would hope encouragement might help.

Kids who's only bin around from 05 or later don't really have a say in this matter. I've somewhat bin experiencing it in my own way. I'm trying new things that are more along the lines of motion graphics, rather then editing music video's like we used to do. Some may call it FX whoring, but making something from near scratch is what I like. Too be honest most fun I've had doing something directly anime related was F.E.A.R. It consisting of somewhat original compositions I found my new thing in that, it being anime or not. I do however understand allot of the "old timers" will drift away. Since they refuse to go beyond simply linear editing. This is their own choice. I'm however implying that "A"mv isn't really all thats out there.

Along with that. If you don't enjoy your hobby don't try and force it. It's not like your getting paid for these video's. Its merely for your own enjoyment and for that of the community. Don't force things.

Recently, I've been working on something a little more engaged than the average AMV. It's really motivating, no matter how relatively small the audience you reach, and it inspires you to find original ways to actually convey your thoughts bending the anime to fit your message, and not the other way around. You should try it (if you haven't yet), if there are any world issues that bother you at the moment.

I don't know what it is but I'm really getting tired of the whole AMV thing. Just something about it does not seem right anymore. It doesn't have that draw it did half a decade ago. When I have the time to actually work on something, I can barely muster up enough drive to start anything new. When I do it's never some big complicated project where I "do the best I can". It's always something simple and lazy. Hell the last time I actually TRIED to do something impressive was in 2003. Since then I just haven't given a crap.
Anyone else going through the same thing... or better yet been there and found a solution to it?
I don't know, I'm simply curious if it's just me or if something has changed.

Something has DEFFINITELEY changed. AMVs are now pretty much illegal and we as amv editors (as if there ever WAS such a category -_-) have to constantly look over our shoulders. And it'll only get worse. I just hope I can hold out long enough to get the current crop of ideas out of my head. Even better, I hope I'm wrong...

I wish I had the get up and go some editors have. I'm lucky if I make 2 complete videos a year, and none of them are ever anything "new" or "dynamic".

My current video's at about 60%.. I'm aiming to have it done by the end of this month, and so far, I'm quite happy with how it's turning out after a lot of experimentation. But after this one I'm not even sure I'll be doing any more videos for a while. It's the start of something new for me, but for some reason I'm fearing it's also the end of it.

I love to edit, but if it isn't fun or compelling, I just don't do it. I've got some great ideas I'd love to make and see completed; but when it comes to editing, the timeline is almost always empty unless I "hit the nail on the head", so to speak.

I guess I just need a little more motivation. :/

Is that the common theme? I find that worrisome. If all the good linear editors quit because they got old, the only people left making simple videos will be the newbs. Then we really will have to say the only good (new) amvs are the ones riddled with effects. Yuck.

I'm in that category, though I haven't been a member for that many years. I think you should count the editing hours put in, not the number of empty years spent with your name in the org directory. Active time spent on the hobby, not join date.

I've been drifting more the longer I'm here, but it's because my videos have gotten more complicated. I don't do the simple vids I used to enjoy making because I think each video has to be a project that will take months of editing for hours each day to complete. If it doesn't take that long to make, it's not worth doing. Even if I really like a simple vid idea, I can't make myself sit down and spend a day editing it. My imaginary standards went up too high to do a simple vid, and I don't have the motivation to spend months on end just so I can sit down to 3.5 minutes of fast-packed enjoyment when it's all finished. I'm stuck in the middle - I don't want to do a complicated video because it's too much effort for too little reward, and I'm too spoiled/jaded/etc to enjoy 'quickie/easy' vids that don't require a half-year to make.

It's probably why I do multi-anime vids. The editing can be simple, but once I count in all the hours and weeks spent getting and prepping the footage, it's still a lot of work to put together.

Here’s my 2-cents worth.

Make AMVs from anime and songs that you yourself enjoy.

Make AMVs that you like. That you will watch when they are finished and say, yeah, I like that.

Forget about competition, trying to please someone else, anyone else’s opinion, quick comments, ratings, ops, etc.

Now, don’t get me wrong. I really love it when I get to see an AMV I made shown at a contest. Please remember this when selecting AMVs for Otakon '07

There’s nothing quite like having a big room full of people laugh, cry, cheer, or say, “WTF was that?” to an AMV you have created.

I like it when I get a nice op or a positive quick comment or a good rating.

But none of these things is the reason I make AMVs.

I make AMVs because I like anime, I like music and, when the spirit takes me, I like to get a little creative and see what I can come up with.

If you’re feeling burned out then, I suggest, you take a short break, then find a song you really like, your favorite anime, and make an AMV just for the fun of it. Then share it here so that we can all laugh, cry, say WTF…
