What makes an amv original for you?
Is it:
1. Using a song that's rarely (if ever) used.
2. Using an anime that's rarely (if ever) used
or 3. Using an extrememely overused song/ anime and taking a whole different view point of it, i.e not being an obvious video like a dbz action video or an inuyasha romance video.

The opposite of imitation, to me, is just as bad as imitation. Making something with Y just to piss on videos made with Z is not real artistic originality, it's pretension.
Originality should never be a matter of source+footage+editing style. These play a role, but only to an extent. To be really original, to me, a video has to be novel on a conceptual level. I wish people who try to make something original would think less of surface originality and more conceptual originality.

The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

x2 for unique editing or combinations you wouldn't normally see.
I also love seeing stuff you would not have seen in the original footage. A good example is creating new art or using, let's say art from a game that was later made into an anime, or manga, etc.
3d characters or hand drawn animation...you made yourself... o_o

Originality is subjective. Have I seen it before? It's the anime, the song, the editing, and the way all three are used together.
A random action vid to a new anime and song is as unoriginal (to me) as a random dbz action vid featuring the usual (expected) characters. Because I've seen it. A lot. Same with "typical romance" or "typical emo" or "typical anything". There are types of vids you see with each genre and the sources make no difference because they're all used the same way.
That said, originality isn't a prerequisite for me to enjoy a video. Some of my favorites are highly unoriginal. I'll make note of that if I review them, but otherwise I don't care. Unoriginal doesn't mean I won't like a vid, it just means I'm less likely to remember the name of it a few months down the line. ^^;

Originality is in the presentation. If I'm watching something and I can honestly say, "this is different," then I consider it original. It varies from video to video because, as Ari said, it's subjective. You can't tie it to any one aspect, be it song or anime or even concept. Because most concepts are portrayed in such a way as to be too open to interpretation. These aren't books we're writing. Even story-driven videos are flexible because no one told you, this happened, then he did this because of this, et cetera and so on.
Yeah you're throwing that around a little too often.Orwell wrote:I don't foresee this going anywhere, so;
