Anime North AMV Contest 2007

Post by Koshi-kun » Sat Jan 13, 2007 12:18 pm

Just a heads up to anyone interested (ie I'm not involved in the contest, just pointing it out to people), that AN (the Canadian con at the Toronto Congress Center in May) is ready for AMV submissions again. Deadline is April 2nd, more details at their site:

Anime North AMV Contest 2007

MOMIJI’S CHALLENGE 2007, their yearly theme, is kind of blast-from-the-past: to win the challenge, you need to use source material that originally appeared before 1990, bonus points for using music that appeared before 1990. This should be interesting.

I'm looking forward to watching them there, so guys, get some good submissions in for the sake of your fellow otaku!

Two questions:

A total of one competition and one exhibition videos are
allowed, but can two exhibition AMVs be submitted instead?

Are exhibition AMVs screened during the main contest?

Thanks!

I've personally no idea, heh, like I said, I'm not affiliated with them and I don't have any experiance submitting to them, so I guess you'll have to email someone.

Exhibitions

Any questions pertaining to the AN MVC should be directed to video@animenorth.com.

Since your question was asked here, however, I'll answer it here. 8-)

Exhibitions are no longer screened during the main show because of the volume of submissions received. However, it does get its own show block. Exhibition videos are usually screened twice over the course of the weekend.

You may only submit one Exhibition video. The change in the rules allowing one Exhibition or Challenge video, is to encourage people to enter the Challenge. In the past, people have been reluctant to enter the Challenge because they were already working on a Competitive video, so we're allowing them to do both. But we don't want an explosion in video submissions, so the new restriction prevents people from entering an Exhibtion, a Competitive and a Challenge. So while I can understand a reading of the rules that suggests that as long as you only submit two videos it's okay, in fact, the implication is supposed to be that no one may submit more than one video in any category either.

I hope that clears things up.

If you haven't done so, please visit http://www.animenorth.com/musicvideos.php
to see our rules for this year.

Bump.

There's only a month left before the closing date. I hope everyone is coming along nicely. :D

There has been some confusion this year about rule changes, so I'd like to direct your attention to:

for some reason, I can't send an email to the address above, so I'll post my questions here:
1. can we submit x.264 mp4 files? (I know it says mp4's are acceptable, just wanted to be sure the x.264 was acceptable)
2. are closing bumpers allowed?

Thanks

Did you try video@animenorth.com?

Bumpers are fine. They shouldn't be too long, however, and it's best not to use music that is significantly different from that in the main body; it's too jarring. Silent bumpers are probably best. Then again, your video isn't judged by its bumpers.

As for x.264, that's a tech question, so I'll hold off on answering it here. I've forwarded your question to our tech and I'll post the answer later. I remember there being a lot of controversy on this subject last year, so I had wanted to specify which codecs were acceptable this year. But we've changed tech guys and the decision was made to restrict format instead. So if it's MPEG4, it won't be disqualified, if that's what you're worried about. :)

I'll get back to you. 8-)

I await your tech person's response on the x.264 mpeg4 then :)

x.264

Post by Kieop » Mon Mar 19, 2007 2:23 am

Sorry, it took so long to get back to you.

We do not currently have the means of converting x.264. However, we will be installing it for the con. I'll be notified once it's installed and tested out for compatibility. It should be okay to send it in.

Since it is an MPEG4 codec, we will not be disqualifying for it, but you would be using it at your own risk.

I would advise using a more established codec, like Xvid, though it is kinda lossy. :(

Anyway, guys, there are 2 wks left until the submission deadline!

Is everyone excited and exhausted?
