Fakedubs and Parodies - Where do they fit in?
I'm curious to hear everyone's opinion on whether these videos should count as true AMVs.
See my "Life Lessons AMV" or go to the animefakedubs.net link in my banner for examples. I was happy that Life Lessons was accepted last summer in the AFO7 AMV contest. The audience seemed to enjoy it pretty well. One thing I did to help my chances of it being accepted was to throw in some light classical music and give it a theme.
I also noticed a few of parodies of this style in the AMV Hell series. If I am correct though, the same style of parodies won't be accepted for AMV Hell 4?
Something else interesting:
Megacon this February is going to be having a "Dub Contest Party".

My crew and I are looking pretty forward to this, considering we pretty much coined the term "fakedub".
So should dub parodies have a category of their own?
Where's the line that distinguishes dub parodies from AMVs?

I don't think of them as amvs. I don't think of trailers and promos as amvs, either. I think what makes an amv is the anime and the music. Amvs are just music videos that happen to use anime footage. Music videos and movie trailers are entirely different things. I guess they're allowed here for the same reason some game vids are - because they're close enough. Though we did get a separate section for the trailers and most fandubs are parodies so they can slip in there. Still...when someone asks for an amv, I think they expect a music video.
Whether or not they should be allowed into contests to compete against actual amvs is up to the people running the contest. If they don't have a trailer section or a fandub section, they probably cut that stuff out or throw anything "anime-related" in together.
As for dubs having their own category...do you mean on this site or in contests? I don't think they should have a category here because people would be uploading entire episode fandubs. Those exist as much as fansubs do and neither belong on this site. Most short dubbed vids are parodies or trailers and we already have sections for those. I think most amv contests would let short fandubs into the comedy section - they aren't much different from vids like Quid Pro Quo, the fans just make their own dub track to lip sync to. Unless they get a whole bunch of fandub vids, they probably don't need a separate category. Just lump them in with the amvs. If it's competing for comedy I doubt anyone would care if the vid has music or not as long as it's funny and uses anime.

I don't see fandubs as beng remotely the same as AMVs, mostly because youa re making your own audio. I hate to say that this fact makes it...easy...because it's surely not and there is a wealth of technical problems introduces by fandubbing. But shoehorning anime into fitting a song, and vice-versa shoehorning a song to fit an anime, is precisely why I find AMVs so appealing in the first place (and why I consider trailers perfectly legit, since their audio is just as forced on them if not more so).

What woud you classify then a video using anime footage and with a song that was written and sung by the creator or people they knew? As much as song as "The Greatest Song in the World (Tribute)" have some bits where they just talk, they are nevertheless treated as much a song as any other. And so even if the song, sung by the creator involved some non-singing parts, then, wouldn't this video be still considered an anime music video too (even if the song was tailored made for the idea of behind the AMV)?badmartialarts wrote:I don't see fandubs as beng remotely the same as AMVs, mostly because youa re making your own audio.

I like fan parodies. I like AMVs. But I don't think they're the same thing. They overlap, and are similar in many ways, and some AMVs overlap fan-parody territory more than others - but I don't think they're synonymous.
As for being here? It's not up for me to decide, but I don't think you have much of a case here. Fan parodies have been around for a looooong time, and if Phade & co. wanted them to be here, they'd already be here.
I wish there were a cataloguing/clearinghouse site for fan parodies, just as I wish there were one for live-action vids. But the fact that sites like that don't exist doesn't make me think that they should be here instead.
Incidentally... I don't mean to sound like an asshole, but have you ever been to an anime convention? They often have screenings of fan parodies, separate from the AMV screenings. Which is good news for you, because you can find an audience for your work without having to arm-twist the org into fitting them in.

Well, <a href="http://www.animemusicvideos.org/members ... =4516>This Is Otakudom</a> has actually been listed as a video here since forever... of course, the fact that Scott made a lot of AMVs before doing fan parodies (and listed them here) probably had something to do with that.SarahtheBoring wrote:As for being here? So unless Otakudom was grandfathered in by its ultimate awesomeness and it's all on a case-by-case basis, then maybe you can list them. I guess a lot of people just choose not to.
