If it's worth doing it's worth doing right. If some recognition or pushing of the envelope occurs, so be it.

I can see from many of the responses here that some people that aren't into competition don't understand how people that ARE can find the very act of competing fun. I can also see that many of you feel that if you analyze any aspect of a hobby it all of a sudden doesn't become fun any more. I'm rather amused and somewhat puzzled by this from an intellectual point of view. It would make for an interesting psychological case study though…

I don't pay attention to these bars you people are talking about.

I just play.

I originally thought they were called bars, but apparently the "proper" term is piano keys. Go figure. :?

There's also the problem of the game not being fun if you always lose. I adore Monopoly, but I played it again for the first time in years recently - I've lost every single time. Suddenly it's not as fun as I remember it being. Even very competitive people may give up if they figure (after losing consistently over a long period of time) that no matter what they do they'll never ever win. The more competitive they are, the more bitter they become after giving up. I'd say that's a lot of the problem, sour grapes and/or depression.

There is a bar, though. There's a lot of bars depending on which amv community you talk to. Certain contests have their own bars that are a lot higher than the ones you'd find, say, in the op exchange section of this forum. Even inside the forum, there are all sorts of mini groups that each have their own bar at a different level. I'm sure even those who make videos for themselves (hah) have a bar they hold their work up to - it might be a heck of a lot lower than most bars, but it's there. The problem comes when they try to compare their work to the work of people using a much higher bar.

Those using the high bar like it's a matter of course aren't going to get the bitterness of those who suddenly realize they've been playing on the kiddie bar all along. It's a rude wake up call for those who hail from smaller forums where their work was top notch. Sort of like going from State to National. Ouch.

Wanting to make the video look as good as you can isn't the same thing as a bar. Someone pushing themselves to do a good job is fine. Someone saying 'if you can't do this effect/editing style/whatever then you aren't good enough for us' is, well, the hardcore anti-WMM assholes.

I understand how competition is fun. What I don't understand are people saying 'I can't be #1 so I'm quiting'. I don't recall ever hearing of an Iron Chef loser throwing the mouse across the room and yelling 'God damnit, that's it, I fucking quit'. Although that would be a rather amusing ending to the contest. Anyway, competition is fine. Throwing a hissy fit because you didn't win the competition is, well, Brakus.
I can also see that many of you feel that if you analyze any aspect of a hobby it all of a sudden doesn't become fun any more. I'm rather amused and somewhat puzzled by this from an intellectual point of view.
There's analyzing and there's being an obnoxious prick. Someone saying 'I think X could be improved by doing such and such, Y didn't really work, and Z needs some more effort spent on it' is analyzing. Someone saying 'You just can't meet the bar. This video sucks because X is horrible, Y looks like shit, and Z sucks warm jizz through a short straw.' is, well, godix.

Oh, I'm all for pushing bars! They're there to be pushed.

I'm only against pushing bars as a means for itself. The point is not pushing a bar, the point is getting some value (be it entertainment or usefulness) out of it. When the value is silly and disproportionate to the effort it takes, then it's wasted effort in my view. That effort may be better spent elsewhere in the world.

What I hope people realize is that a brief e-penis erection is not really much of a value.

On the other hand I like high bars. They drive away the silly people who look at them and think they'll never reach them and give up. I'm sure some of you will agree that it acts as a filter keeping most Brakus clones out of the community.
The Birds are using humanity in order to throw something terrifying at this green pig. And then what happens to us all later, that’s simply not important to them…

If I've learned anything about the org it's that a fair number of people on it have erectile dysfunction and need to go to extraordinary lengths to get hard. Of course these are the same people who have no idea what they're supposed to do after they get hard so in the end it probably doesn't have much value.

I wasn't aware that it's not fair game to openly mock anyone you want. Especially in the case of people who no matter what I say I can't actually make them look dumber than they've already made themselves look.
