It's basically episode 52. But even with the knowledge of the TV series events, the movie is a bit confusing.

You probably could watch the movie and have it still make a small amount of sense, but to get the full effect, I'd suggest seeing the series first. It's usually a bad idea to see the movie before the series (but not always). From experience, watching The End of Evangelion and Death and Rebirth without seeing the show = NO
