Which is it usually? [Song or anime first or both?]

Generally, song first, like nearly everybody else has said already. I may think of a mood that I'd want to use a particular video source for (like sappy romantic Mahoromatic video, or upbeat happy School Rumble video), but in those cases the song doesn't drop in until later and then the idea is still solidly based around what goes on in the lyrics or in the music itself.
Often I'll hear seemingly-appropriate songs while watching the show, and in a lot of cases I have to say 'no, I would never make that' and try to forget about it so I can actually still enjoy listening to the song. The sheer amount of times I have to listen to a song while editing usually makes me hate hearing it for a while when the video's novelty wears off or at least some of the qualities that made me love the song are diminished, and for some songs I just couldn't stand to let that happen ("Iris", "Found Out About You", and "Wishing (If I Had A Photograph Of You)" to name three in particular).

After a look at the videos I did over the last 2 years I can clearly say that the majority of them was inspired by the anime - I guess I'm one of the only ones with that
However in most of these inspirations I recognized the songs to have editing potential before - I just hadn't watched the right anime yet.
I don't neccessarily agree that finding an anime to a song is easier. If you watch lots and lots of anime, there are also songs popping into your mind which you've maybe never thought of editing to before

lol, no. I know anime ALOT more than I know the BILLIONS on BILLIONS of songs out there. So usually the anime comes before the song. But every so often I get like the FEAL of the song from the anime. I don't know how to explain it. Possibly because the beat from the song lines up with the beats of the soundtrack.... but ocasionally, I just KNOW the song will fit! I don't even have to listen to the whole thing.
This doesn't always work though... occasionally I just listen to the rest and I'm like "...." but occasionally it's like this Karin video.

Definitely the song comes first. My interest in anime just happens to coincide with the interest of music in amvs. 9 out of 10 times the reason I like/keep a video is because I like the song, or at least its not disagreeable. The video itself is just a accompanying piece to give me something to pay attention to, rather than just listening to music.
Your other thread talks about style, but I feel like my response is more suited to this thread. As far as I know, I don't have a style, I don't have a guideline to follow, a certain thing aspect I like to portray. I do however, enjoy political irony, and thus make it the basis, as in vote for gendo, or just a poster like in a different version of Meate tea party (which will be availabe on the org.... sometime). Preferably cold war sociopolitical stuff at that, however whatever is around works. I suppose this is the closest it gets to defining a style.

if you read his question i was saying "both" :/Knowname wrote:^^JaddziaDax wrote:yes

in some cases the song came first... like my loveless video... i heard the song and wanted to do a video to it... but didnt know what anime to use... till i got the anime... then i thought "this would be perfect" then the ideas came flooding...
or in cases like my Princess Tutu vid, i have been wanting to do a tutu video but didnt know what song i wanted to use till i heard that one O.o... (though i still want to do another tutu video, just a different kind of tutu video, and im still flipping between 2-3 songs trying to make a decision)
usually its a combination of the two.... though... and as someone said alot of the time it depends on what im watching to what inspires me.

Most often I hear a song and think of some anime. This is what happened for my last AMV, Hell.
But sometimes it's just the opposite. Last night I saw someone post something about kids buying an Akira DVD at the store and that got me thinking about Akira and then I went looking for a good song to do an Akira DVD. Now I've used up my daily limit on saying, "Akira."
So, yeah, I guess both.

Pray 4 peace! Not an AMV, something you can do to help!
