A GOOD Naruto video? About the Hyuugas? Right here!

Post by iamfanboy » Mon Oct 16, 2006 1:38 am

Well, someone went and did it: Someone went and made an awesome Naruto video to a song that gets used, and used, and OVER-used, because he doesn't let someone else's bad art stop him from making good art.

Wait a second. That person is ME?! Oh, how wonderfully talented I am, to have done this! So modest about my abilities, too!

Anyway, the Naruto video is set to "It's My Life" by Jon Bon Jovi, it centers around both Hinata Hyuuga's fight with Neji and Neji's fight with Naruto, along with a bit of his redemption in the end, and it kicks ass.

Here's the link:

And yes, it IS my first video. I didn't even know how to use the video editing software when I first started working on this yesterday - but I larned it real good, and the result speaks for itself.

And my next one will be even better.

Tell me what you think of the video? Flame me for being so arrogant? C&C is, naturally, welcome - but be careful, for I am perfectly willing to improve my video in every way that would make sense. Thanks for your comments!

Have you ever even SEEN an AMV before? Because if you think what you churned out is good, you must have had a very VERY poor sampling.

Strike 1: Subtitles
Strike 2: Crappy quality
Strike 3: Cheesy wipes

And that's just the tip of the iceburg. If you get rid of those problems, I'll at least be able to sit through your AMVs without gouging my eyes out.

Sorry to be so harsh, but in case you were serious about your cockiness, I really needed to tell you how much that sucked. I couldn't hold back. It's for your own good. Keep trying, but know that you don't have an innate talent for AMV editing and that you'll have to put in a bit more effort. It'll help if you read some of the tutorials.

You fell right for my ambush: pretending to be arrogant to make SURE I get criticism. You fool!

...so well spotted mate, I wasn't serious.

Seeing as how it's my first video and I literally had the idea, learned Adobe Premiere, and made the video in about 6-8 hours all told, I WANTED to draw insults - my friends have a tedendancy to be nice, and I believe that one valid critic is worth a thousand yes-men.

*nod* Wipes are cheesy, check - but I only used 5 of them all told. *blink, blink* I was more trying to see how they would look more than anything else, and they didn't seem all that unbearable. Is there some guideline about which wipes are and are not good to use?

I'll probably, in the next day or so, pull it out again and do a faux-widescreen as seems to be the fashion (wouldn't be too hard, there aren't any double-lines of text in the clips I chose). Besides, I'll have to learn how to do that anyway, should any more videos occur to me that happen to take footage from subbed stuff. But I at least rather thought 3/4ths of them fit the music video and the story behind it, particularly at the end - was it truthfully THAT out of place?

Quality, however, I can do nothing about, unless some secret way to clean up .avi footage exists that I have not. I was just as peeved about it as you, particularly the stuff I had to get from 61 - nothing seemed to work right that was in there.

And, having attracted the insults that I desired (very important, that!) I will now broadcast my real thoughts.

It's... well, in the theatre, it would be called 'workmanlike'. Nothing spectacular, but not in and of itself awful. Just some fighting set to a song, after all; a dime a dozen. It's well-timed and manages to convey the pace of the two fights well, which is important for those sorts of videos, but it doesn't make it brilliant. The quality issue, particularly at the two minute mark and just in the beginning, when it was cutting to Hinata's past, is troublesome. Were I able to remake it using a better source (which I probably will, once the appropriate episodes come out on DVD in another year and a half or so), I would tighten up quite a bit of it.

Truthfully? The only thing that I like about my own video is the way it uses the song to establish and convey the pace of the actual story from the anime. Other than that, if someone else made it and showed it to me, I don't think I'd keep it as an 'everyday' watcher. Well, maybe I would because I like the song and it suits the song reasonably (I apparently kept a much worse Naruto video set to this song from some time ago in my archives <_<, as I found out about halfway through production of this), but this video would only earn a 4 or 5 out of 10 from me... if we could rate our own videos, which I don't think we can. Not unwatchable, just not amazing.

But then, all I wanted with this video was to learn, and that's just what I did.

And now, for my next video, which I CAN steal from the DVD source! Here I come, El-Hazard!

Glad to see you weren't serious.

There are ways to clean up avi files. Check the tutorials.

Hate to say it, but while simple action AMVs are a dime a dozen, what I mean by that is that I should get a dime every time I have to watch a dozen of these. Yours isn't even that well-timed. Watch Toushi, or the more recent Bladebeat Graffiti if you want to see well-timed.

And you can comment on your own entries. It's just very silly.

I'm glad you weren't serious, but I unfortunately was. Your video is unwatchable. Seriously. The wipes, while there aren't many of them, look god-awful. I feel like there's no relationship between the action and the song other than they have similar themes and coexist. The subtitles will drive away people before they even see the first minute. You really have a long way to go.

My recommendation? Watch more good AMVs. Get some inspiration. Don't say "There's no way I could do that." If they could do it, you can too. Read the tutorials. They will help you fix a lot of the fundamental problems you've been having. And yes, practice.

Oh, and don't be a troll to get people's attention. Just honestly ask for feedback.

Oo oi? when did I say that I couldn't do that?

Step 1: Learn the program. I did that, and (I feel) successfully, too... considering that when I first opened it up it took me an hour to figure out how to import files to take scenes from. <_<

Step 2: Explore the program.

Step 3: Master the program.

I never wanted this to compete, or even contend, with some of the fancy-schmancy people you just named - but if you think MY video is lousy, you need to watch some more truthfully bad videos.

Now, maybe a-m-v.org only attracts the cream of the crop and scares away anyone remotely bad (which isn't likely, to judge from the sampling of videos I've already downloaded), but the only REAL flaws in my video is the quality of the source, (arguably) the subtitles, and the wipes... all of which you mentioned, and I conceded.

The timing, while not perfect, is reasonably tight and to the beat - far more so than the UNBEARABLE amount of bad videos I saw to "It's My Life" while I was looking around after first concieving of this video. While I didn't use effects, I also didn't have them in my mind when I storyboarded it out. I didn't just toss the scene in to the music, and that is a point that I will argue with you. If thou'rt so prejudiced against the subtitles and source that you can't fairly judge the timing, maybe hold up a ruler to block them out?

In a couple of days, once I have some distance from the video and it's sat in my head for a while, I'll do a second fine cut and clean up the source as well as make it faux widescreen... and use subtler transitions. (and cut out the cheesy scene with Hinata turning around, replacing it with more fighting). Could you bring up more specific complaints about the timing, that I might fix it? I've still got something like 11 minutes of footage that I didn't use...

I once thought I was an okay editor.......then I seen a good video, and realised I sucked. That was three years ago, and I'm still learning everytime I open premiere.
I've never seen an instance where a wipe looked passable in an action video.
One more point, timing is either on or off, there is no inbetween.
