SiteAdvisor Paints the Org Red

Post by TaranT » Fri Oct 06, 2006 2:35 am

McAfee purchased SiteAdvisor and is now promoting it to their customers (link).

SiteAdvisor is flagging animemusicvideos.org with the red X, claiming that the download of Crystal Player is possibly dangerous.

SiteAdvisor is also red-flagging many sites that have links to the Org; e.g. amvwiki.org, amv-contest-lists.org, and several member sites that I checked.

If you run a site that you want to generate traffic, you may want to look into this. To see how they rate your site, go to SiteAdvisor and type your Web address into the field that they provide.

Frankly, their algorithm is questionable. While the Org gets red for one download, oldversion.com gets yellow despite having many (what they call a "small fraction"). Download.com even gets a green (with caveat).

And although many of our sites are given red for linking to the Org, Wikipedia still gets a green even though it links to the Org as well.

They have a stupid percentile ranking. 1 "dangerous" download out of 8 (a-m-v.org) ist 12.5% while 52 out of over 7700 (download.com) is less than 1%. In addition McAfee claims to have "credible users" which rate download.com save. I wanna know who that users are. And their ranking of programs at all is very questionable. To mark an annoying but harmless Adware red puts it on the same level as really dangerous backdoor trojans. This program is a really heavy damage for McAfee's reputation as a serious and trustworthy company.

Well it ought to be easy enough to remove that link from the site. I do know that when it was first added, there was definately no spyware present though.

What the fuck, myspace is in the green? That's bullshit.

This thing is fucking stupid. The org is one of the only site on the web I know I can trust in terms of spyware/adware.
