Retired Videos

Post by anneke » Fri Sep 08, 2006 11:04 am

I would like to make a suggestion that we have an option of 'retired' videos. People would still be able to download them, but they could not leave comments on them. What I would most like is for the 'link' to visually be different then more recent videos. So instead of links being: 'Direct', 'Indirect', 'No', there would also be an option for 'Retired', which could be Direct or Indirect or one option of each. 'Retired Direct', and 'Retired Indirect'. I just get sick of a video that is 5+ years old getting a review where the person says it's crap. Uh...it's 5+ years old, and back then it was pretty good, no duh that now it's concered crap. (Shrugs). I could always removed the video/files, but that seems abit counter productive for what the site is.

And maybe in the future this could help with Video storage, because if a video is 'retired' it would then be on a slower server or such. Just an idea for the future.

While I probably wouldn't use it myself (yet, anyway), I've heard dozens of editors complain about getting "it sucked" comments on really old videos. With this method, it may help to cut down on people begging to have their videos removed from Local. Also, it might reduce the number of people who make a deletion request for a remaster, and then just... never upload a new version (as another way of getting their video off of the site and away from commenters).

It seems like a good notion at first glance, so I support anneke's idea.

And if it's to much work to turn of comments or whatever, they can be left on. People could still review and comment, but they will have atleast gotten a visual clue (because people are idiots and don't read even big bold type that says the video is old), that the video is old.

likely to be abused.
a youtube jocky makes a video, has friends register and give him 10s across the board, then he retires the video. rince, repeat.
then we have crap on the top 100 :/

could put an age limit on it... like from the "upload" date...

or you could make the premeire date stand out really huge on the video profile with gigantic sparklies like it was squeezed out of someones "glitter my myspace" or something O.o

The 'retirement' option is being suggested for videos that are extremely old and for which ops are no longer required. If this were implemented, I can't imagine a minimum retirement age of less one year. Even if someone had the patience to wait that year for a shot at the top 100, the abuse would be extremely obvious.

There are no real ways of stopping top 100 abuse if people really want to do it.... A bit back there was dicussions in putting an age and/or frequence of reviews factor into the top 100 that would have the video's currrent 100 ten score decrease with age and/or frequency of reviews... Kind of like as songs get less popular they move down the charts..

I know some creators do like to be able to get feedback about thier videos no matter the age so turning off reviews after a certain age would not be desirable, having that as an option to turn it off after a set period of time is an interesting idea... but that's somethign that would have to be developed a lot me to make sure it's fair and works for creators..

Maybe allow a retirement option (no further comments) only if the opinion/star ratings are erased AND disabled for said vid.

Regardless of turning off the option to review or comment or not.

Can we still get a 'link' option for 'retired'. People could still comment/review if they want, but the idiots would know they were downloading an old video. Which is what I'm mainly looking for. Then later code could be introduced to limit comments but I'm not as worried about that.

But there's nothing stopping them from saying "OMGWTF THIS IS LAME" even if you do have it marked as retired. People are always going to say silly things and they're going to fail to pay attention. It's human nature. You can't eliminate human nature by recoding.

I'm a fan of the "if it's stupid, roll your eyes and hit the back arrow" method.
