True enough, if you sent me the lossless codec version, I could certainly do it, but it should be easy enough for somone with your obvious skill to correct.Knowname wrote: why don't you ysi it to Kionon and than upload it to the org. lol I think everybody else but Scintilla and a few other are as confused or moreso than you o.0.
Lol I hope you didn't think your project was over -_- anyway again, I say, you rock! ;p

I should seriously work on my aspect ratio and resolution guide.
At any rate, I find it interesting that another person actually took up Turbo's challenge and decided to remaster Engel. This one is closer to the original than Turbo's (aspect ratio-wise) and is overall better looking. Although I do agree that it is a bit too dark in spots, but this is how the Platinum version is. Like at 3:38 (Kaysow ver., 3:44 Turbo ver. and KC ver.) when Asuka is facing Rei, her face and the back of Rei's head are totally black, depending on my monitor settings. Compare this to the original, which is a bit brighter (but with some over saturated reds), and Turbo's version where you can clearly see the colors of Asuka's face (including the whites of her eyes) and the back of Rei's head. I don't have the original DVD release to compare the two, but the Platinum Editions I own are quite darker it seems, than the sources for the previous 2.

Yeah, I hear that's because they actually lost the original master of episode 16, so they couldn't really have it up to Renewal-par.
Turbo: This "Sand Camel" guy is making a DVD of Evangelion extras, and it's gonna be up via torrent. Check it out here; http://sandcamel.blogspot.com/
They tell me there'll be remasters of videos on it, including the awesome "Evangelion Opus".
Well Kionon, you seem to have your shit together, so I'll take your word for it: Should I do it like I proposed? Just give the go-ahead =)

Just make two versions, 720x480 and 640x480. The first you will need when you convert to MPEG-2 and burn your DVD. The second you should encode in a standard downloadable format. Remember, your 720x480 must be a perfect stretched out version of the 640x480, and then when you burn it to DVD make sure you tell your DVD authoring program to have it flagged to 4:3.Kaysow wrote:Well Kionon, you seem to have your shit together, so I'll take your word for it: Should I do it like I proposed? These are the steps I would follow:
1) Export a lossless copy of your edited movie footage alone.
2) Toss it into VirtualDubMod.
3) Adjust size to 640x480 making sure to select the "maintain aspect ratio by adding letterboxing" option. This will make the entire file 4:3, but will keep the 16:9 ratio of the actual movie footage.
4) Export a new lossless copy.
5) Replace old copy in editor with new copy.
6) Export a (I assume your editing in) 720x480 lossless copy from your editor.
7) Toss that into VirtualDubMod
8) Create a resized 640x480 lossless codec
9) Then create a resized 640x480 lossy version in a downloadable format.
You may wish to mess around with filters in case you didn't preprocess, but your 720x480 version looked pretty clean and sharp to me.
I am not the most advanced here. I like to think I have my shit together, but that's only because I refuse to ever stop learning. I constantly pester #AMV regulars about their pet projects. I'll bother Zero for H.264 help, or I'll bother trythil for Free/Open Source help.... The more you know, it isn't just for NBC anymore.

Get the remastered R2 end of eva movie.. that's what you use if you want to remaster a video using end of eva.. not some downloaded version.. i have the version you have and i must say the quality is still a lot better if you get the region 2 version. I wonder if they have the actual region 2 version available for download. I couldn't find it. I ended spending over 60 bucks on the DVD. O__O

I noticed when I was working on Episode 16 Platinum that it had some issues (the lines have kind of a reddish tint as well as some haloes, and the lines are very heavy during the shot where Unit-01 is sinking to its waist in Leliel). This would explain why.Kaysow wrote:Yeah, I hear that's because they actually lost the original master of episode 16, so they couldn't really have it up to Renewal-par.
Just noticed this.640x480 seems to be the very best for computerviewing, but 720x480 is the only one that lets me keep all of the picture (and the quality), so isn't that preferable in pretty much every other way?
The resolution on the DVD is not 'correct' (rip an anamorphic 16:9 DVD for a good example). The 720x480 picture on the series is stretched horizontally-- not by much, but it really shows up on medium-sized round objects. So you need to resize the picture to 640x480 to restore the display aspect ratio (720x480 on your computer screen has a display aspect ratio of 3:2). Don't crop to 640x480, otherwise you end up with a horizontally stretched picture with bits missing off the sides. Not necessarily a problem in a regular video, but we're going for top image quality here.
16:9 productions can be encoded in two ways: as a regular 4:3 DVD, where the letterboxes are a part of the picture itself, and as an anamorphic DVD, where the 16:9 picture is shoved into 3:2, encoded, and later resized (and letterboxed, if necessary) by the DVD player so that it displays at 16:9. When you rip the DVD, the picture is at 720x480, which can't pass for 16:9 even with a bad light and a lot of makeup.

If you're combining 4:3 and 16:9, then you have three choices.
1. Crop the 4:3 footage until it's 16:9
2. Crop the 16:9 footage until it's 4:3
3. Letterbox the 16:9 footage, making the whole thing 4:3.
The original Engel never had this choice, the movies being encoded at the same aspect ratio as the series (the human eye might ignore the borders, but the encoder doesn't...). You'll be taking the third option, resizing the movie to 640x352 and adding borders so that the video becomes 640x480.
Sorry if I'm stating stuff you know. I'm just covering everything, because I'm not sure what your method is.

OK, I still don't get all of the this-point-that stuff, but I think I know how to go about it now.
I did buy the EoE DVD, but when I downloaded a version from Renewal and compared them, the de-interlaced, lossy download is still a LOT sharper than the other footage. I like posting pics, so here's an example

Purchased (assumed) VHS transfer
