Engel
Kevin Caldwell's "Engel" is my all time favourite, so I took it upon me to perfect it for my own use on DVD. It ended up being an ambitious effort to perfect the lip-syncing and whatnot, so check it out, fans of the original. This one's in 50mb, but goodlooking nonetheless.

your like the second person to do this... one other person, I know was doing this as well. I wonder when the Euphoria remakes and Whisper of the Beast remakes will start pileing in.
Very very ambitios though. ppl rareley quite know how good a video is until they attempt something like this.
I KNEW that first scene was Asuka not Shinji!! the first remake got it wrong... funny that Asuka and Shinji are in identicle scenes... I wasn't even aware of that shinji scene until that other remake o.0

You've got to be joking.. the quality difference is hugeKnowname wrote:your like the second person to do this... one other person, I know was doing this as well. I wonder when the Euphoria remakes and Whisper of the Beast remakes will start pileing in.
also the other video messed up the aspect ratio on the end of eva footage.. why the f did he stretch it.. it's a freakin' effect purposely done in the original video.. I've seen others do this same effect and I have done it as well in my twist video(not on the org due to it being incomplete)Very very ambitios though. ppl rareley quite know how good a video is until they attempt something like this.

I will check out this video and see how you did.. Might put it in vegas to see if you matched frame by frame.. witch would be very important to a remaster IMO.

No matter how much it gets redone, you can't replace the original. The less than perfect quality of a VHS combined with the rough sync adds a element that you can't find in the sterile amv environment of today. [/end liberal sentimental crap and prepares to install the next Mao*Mart]

The rough synch? ...Maybe. Perfect beat synch is good, perfect lip synch can look unnatural if the speech is too fast. Not even the original Japanese stuff is perfectly synched, especially for scenes where the only two mouth positions are 'open' and 'closed'.Orwell wrote:No matter how much it gets redone, you can't replace the original. I agree with you on the quality though. There are same videos you watch that are kind of rough, and it just... works.

Little known trivia about the original Engel: Everytime I get a new computer or install a fresh OS, Engel is the first video I play just to kind of test everything out. I have been doing this since Caldwell released it. It's not my favorite video. It's just become... habit.
I watched both videos going at the exact same time next to each other. My main complaint is that the remake is not the proper aspect ratio. It is unflagged 720x480. The original version is 320x240. The edges of the remake should have been cleaned and the video resized to maintain the aspect ratio of the TV series. 720 may be what MPEG-2 is encoded in, but flagged will make your DVD player display it correctly at a 4:3 resolution. Although I can make VLC player correct the TV footage, which then matches up almost perfectly (other than some longer edging all around), the EoE movie footage is then an improper aspect ratio, as bars were added to only allow it to be properly formated at 720x480, not at the 4:3 640x480. So, you get a choice, watch the TV footage incorrect, or watch the movie footage incorrect. As long as one is incorrect, it does not match Caldwell's original.
My advice is to add extra bars (like Caldwell did himself, and you can see it if you pause the two next to each other) to the movie footage to keep it correct, and then cut around the edges and resize the TV footage, exporting a 640x480 4:3 copy of the original. Perfectly doubled in size, and increased a hundred fold in quality.

I realized this too, but by then I was too far into it to back out. So here it is "perfected" (no really), for what it's worth. Might just be taking the fun out of things, but who knows? Bad syncing in the original annoyed at least me, like the finger-thing, and I wanted to fix it. Although in the end, I honestly can't tell wether it's better, apart from the technical bit.Orwell wrote:No matter how much it gets redone, you can't replace the original. At first, it really was just a remaster, but it was too good an oppurtunity not to fix these things

Naw, it's the shots at 03:45 (there's no timer in Caldwell's version), and Asuka and Shinji screaming is supposed to move around more. It doesn't really matter, but it took me weeks to decide to use these two instead. One has a timer now (uneditable to me), and the close-up of their faces isn't panning, since it's from the episode preview. I think what was originally used was a preview from one of the VHS'es, only it was recut for RenewalMelanchthon wrote:Is that the one where Asuka's sitting in her plugsuit in a playground or something and the teddy explodes in front of her? If so, then that's on Platinum. *vid still downloading*

The most ambitious part was of course the lipsyncing on the deck of the ship (01:53), with the sky panning in the background and everything. ALL the singing there is shopped.
Great to see it's enjoyable
