So... um... what exactly is wrong with Youtube?

Post by solos155pm » Fri Jun 23, 2006 12:52 pm

Earlier today, I tried to post an indirect link to an AMV I have hosted on Youtube.com. When that didn't work, I tried posting the link on the forum; I couldn't help but notice that the name "youtube" was changed. Is there a reason for this? If there is, it doesn't seem to appear in the FAQs...

Thanks.

... and... there it goes again. Changed to "hosatchel."

The point is that we just want you to host it here and not elsewhere. animemusicvideos.org wishes to remain the community's catalogue, so hosatchel is unfavourable competition. If people stop posting videos on the .org, how can it ever become a catalogue of all AMVs that it can get?

The bottom line is, the service here is better anyway. Go upload it to the local server. NOW!

Pretty stupid to try to block talk about youtube, IMO....

[MOD19: Deliberately dodging the site's word filters isn't the smartest thing, either...]

well, not exactly. The greater point is twofold:

1) that thy-tube officially does not allow stuff made from copyrighted works. Nobody pay attention to this, of course, but we are technically helping people not break their TOS.

2) that thy-tube, contrary to their TOS, is currently a repository for huge amounts of fansubbed anime, which are being 'rebroadcast' without original license-holder permission. Abstractly, it's "better" to have illegally-copied anime transmitted streaming in junky quality than downloaded to people's HDs in full and persistent quality, but it is a very, very fine line, and it's still not being done with permission.

I have no actual idea why the wordfilter is in (though the current replacement is there to be silly), but these are strong probably justifications of why it was imposed.

Okay, I get it. I misunderstood what this site was for. I thought this was just an AMV database, which linked to videos shared elsewhere to save on bandwidth. If hosting's free, then I don't see why not...

The whole word switch thing is funny if you know what's going on, but it just brings more attention to That Site. Now we have new (to the forum at least) people wondering what this weird hostachel thingy is. Ever read Harry Potter? The whole infamy is raised because the thing isn't allowed to be spoken.

The Site Which Shall Not Be Named. :!:
 Ooh! What's that? Tell me - tell me!

I think going out of your way to fix people who sidestep the filter is too much. We shouldn't have to PM new members to explain what this hostachel (sp?) thing is - because we can't tell them on the forum. If you make a fuss out of the site, you should at least explain to new people what the fuss is about. If you don't want to explain and draw more attention to That Site, don't make a fuss about it.

I would never have found out what that 'girl with pretty eyes' thing was all about if they hadn't changed some "secret blacklisted thing" to that term. Thanks to the fuss, I ended up asking around and finding out exactly what they were trying to hide. If they hadn't hid it, I wouldn't have been curious and ended up getting scarred for life. This hostachel will have the same negative result. It defeats the purpose.

.
.

And solos155pm - you didn't misunderstand the purpose of the site. It is a database to *list* amvs. Whether or not you link or upload them here is entirely up to you. For some amvs you *have* to use an indirect link (hentai, excessive violence). You're still free to find other hosts - just not That Site. So far That Site is the only one on the internet we don't allow indirect links to. Why? Because it's a scary site that shall not be named. Anything else is perfectly fine and welcome. ;p

It's both - videos that can't be hosted here, or aren't because of the editor's choice or other resaons, can be listed without hosting. But hosting is a major focus.

Hosting here really is for people who don't pay for any sort of webhosting already. There's no real need to bother with using other free hosting when we have our own. It's nice that you care about how much bandwidth you use, but you can show you care in another way as well.
