I'd third-fourth-fifth that same-series-as-source looks like a trailer or a preview. Which... isn't necessarily a bad thing; it's just not terribly exciting, especially if I've already seen the series.
Now... you could mess with that, for example, being evilly misleading about what a series is actually about. Or combining two series using the tone of one and the characters of another. Or something like that.
Really, the same goes for most songs with really common, really strong associations to the audience, whether that's a song from another anime, from a well-known movie, or anything else with a single common association. If you know that the audience will probably be thinking of that other series (or game, or movie, or whatever), then it will interfere with their viewing of your AMV unless you take that factor into account.
This is also probably why it's difficult to make an AMV with a song that has already been done - people will have the other video(s) in the backs of their minds.
So it's usually most effective to keep those associations in mind and play with (or against) them, rather than ignoring them.
I guess what I'm saying is that it doesn't necessarily have to be taboo, but it would be a good idea to keep prior associations in mind.

I don't like that taboo, but I've heard of it. I think it should be the other way around. Now that we've actually had some popular musical artists banned from vidding purposes, I'd think we'd be encouraging more use of unlicensed music. Unliscensed anime + Unliscensed music = amvs they can't touch. Seems too simple, I guess. And lots of osts are licensed in the US now. Still, I think they're more likely to recognize and go after well known artists than they are anime cd tracks (assuming they even recognize which tracks are liscensed).
I'm very supportive of using anime music, especially if the anime series is accompanied by character cds. The songs sung by main characters are practically begging for amv character profiles - it seems natural to me for editors to put the two together. And most anime openings and closings (the 'natural amvs' to anime music) don't use those character cd tracks, so there's no knee-jerk association with the music.
I've used opening songs before with positive results, especially if I do more lyric sync than the original. The familiarity of the songs just meant people are more inclined to like the music, and thus the video. There wasn't any taboo drawback to it. The only place I hear people say "anime music + anime footage = bad" is here on the forum, and it doesn't come up that often here, either.
It's sort of like the "don't use over-used anime" taboo. It's not a real taboo (like, say...starwipes and barndoors) because no one stops doing it and people continue to openly enjoy seeing others do it.

I think he meant the BG music.*inverse* wrote:Hmm... I disagree with that. I used to love using character songs for profile vids. I'd make another if I had the motivationJudgeHolden wrote:I would avoid using the same music from the anime series as your footage .... other than that .. HAVE FUN!
But, heh I think you even did one of those too. I really don't think it matters, as long as you think the song fits, go for it.
