I'm not good with percentages, but I ran through the top 10 list and did a comparison between creators and forum regulars. Some interesting stats:

There are 183 creators holding the top 300 videos on the list.

129 creators with 1 video
25 creators with 2 videos
11 creators with 3 videos
7 creators with 4 videos
4 creators with 5 videos
2 creators with 6 videos [not counting Animix]
3 creators with 7 videos

Of the 27 creators with 3 or more videos:

3 never posted.
4 posted 12 or less times.
5 posted between 72 and 135 times.
6 posted between 193 and 748 times.
5 posted between 936 and 2010 times
4 posted between 4830 and 8267 times.

The ones with 4 to 7 videos are mostly the ones who've posted over 1000 times.

Quite a few of those 3+ creators would have had even more vids if I'd counted to the end of the top 10 list. Some of the regular forum posters would have hit the 3+ mark if I'd counted to the end of the list as well. I cut it off at 300 since videos above that mark tend to stay on the list for a year if not forever.

Looking at it this way, and knowing how few creators post in the forums, there's a clear connection between top 10 spots (held by the same creators) and frequent forum posters.

The questions - Are they there because they frequent the forums? Or do they frequent the forums because they're there?

Well, I don't think the discussion neccesarily started in regard to the most popular editors; in fact I find that forums are often a means for less popular editors to survive.

As you might notice from the VCAs, there's absolutely no correlation between forum participation and VCA winners and voters alike; there is a huge "silent majority" on the .org which never uses the forums, I believe.

It's also fair to note that posts accumulate over time and something like 80%+ of the videos on the top 10% list are over a year old.

It may just be a series of coincidences stringing from people being here a long time and nobody willing to question a vid on the top 10% (if everone else think's it's good, it must be!)

I was surprised at how many of the forum regulars have multiple videos up there. There are still plenty of people who never go near the forums, and some who've been up for a while but only started going to the forum in the last year. But, still, almost every forum regular I could think of had at least one video on the list. I didn't realize I *knew* that many forum regulars. ^_^;;

And by 'regulars' I mean people who post often enough for me to recognize their names without being familiar with their most popular vids.

0.3% of the videos here are considered "great" while there are only 0.02% of the people here, which have a strong forum presence. So what does this mean? It means that you are more likely to make one awesome video than becoming someone in this forum that anybody will take notice of (by a factor of 15).

That doesn't really surprise me, considering what the average demographic of the entire 'Org is. It's not all that hard to make a good video in the opinion of the masses. Just slap an overused anime with an equally overused nü-metal or pop/rock song and they'll eat it up. Forum-goers' tastes are far more picky than that, which insofar as videos are speaking, require more effort on the part of someone to improve to even start gaining recognition on the forum (discounting the obvious presence and reputations of those who frequently used OT back in the day). The overused anime and music may still be there, but the forum primarily emphasizes technical skill, which while it's not unheard of concerning videos that don't get exposure here, has by tendency not held up substantial numbers in comparison.

Something I think would be more interesting to look at is how many VCA winners (which would equate to the populars on the Top 10%) are with videos that had significant forum exposure - convention exposure notwithstanding. I always seem to know the editors that hit the VCAs from at least some participation on their part from the forum.
