Suggestion about the rating system
I have a small piece to say, and it might not be the first you've heard of it-- I'm brand spanking new to the forum, this thing is *huge*, and it takes forever to get even one of these pages to load.
Which is a nice intro to my point.
I think it'd be handy if, in addition to the 1-5 rating system, there were an option along the lines of 'Could Not View.' I have an extremely out-of-date media setup on my computer, and out of the few hundreds of AMVs I've downloaded here, about 75% I never got to watch because my computer just can't play them. That left me with having to rate AMVs I'd never seen.
Additionally, when I get a new computer (someday!), I'd like to re-download the AMVs I like, and the ones I never got to see-- but there's no way for me to tell which ones I couldn't get to play and the ones I deleted because I didn't really want to rewatch them.
It would just make things simpler for the owners of simpler computers, as well as be more acurate in the way of voting on AMVs; keeping the value from being skewed.

There's no excuse to not be able to view any video here. Hell, there's a fucking guide on codecs! http://www.animemusicvideos.org/guides/playback/

All the codecs in the world wont let a 386 automagically play an h.264 file.

My fault; I took for granted that it actually wasn't the computer dispite what the OP said, because that's the usual explination people that don't understand how codecs work usually offer up (at least in my experience).Zarxrax wrote:Unless your computer is too slow to play the video, as he said.BasharOfTheAges wrote:There's no excuse to not be able to view any video here. I have the codec, it -is- actually the fact that my computer is too slow. I should have been more clear on that point. (It's a '98 second-hand accounting laptop. Definitely not meant for the kinds of things I use it for. ^^)
And I realized that another point I made-- about my not knowing which AMVs were viewable by me or just deleted-- will not change no matter what. I only mentioned it because in the future, this might help people tell the difference.

Well, your experience is actually not that common. It's far more likely that someone is just unable to comprehend how to watch the video. I'd say over 95% of the feature's use would be abuse in that sence.

No, but some clever hacking will let an 8088 do full-motion video, with audio, in text mode.Zarxrax wrote:Unless your computer is too slow to play the video, as he said.BasharOfTheAges wrote:There's no excuse to not be able to view any video here. But once they have the proper codecs, they can convert the file to a more compatible format, right? I mean, I couldn't convert xvid files to mpg with TMPGEnc until I downloaded the codecs. So you can still send them to get the codecs if they can't view the video. Then you could tag on a link to quick and simple video converters like tmpgenc.Zarxrax wrote:Unless your computer is too slow to play the video, as he said.

I have at least one very old computer (pre microsoft word) and it plays all my videos as long as I convert them to a medium bitrate mpg first.
