Advise to buy new hardware

Post by TenIn20-10 » Tue Apr 18, 2006 1:05 am

Well, I have the following "equipment":

1) processor Pentium IV with 2.66 GHz.
2) 768 in RAM.
3) 30 of 80 GB in Hard Disk (HD).
4) Radeon 7000 with 32 bits.
5) an AGP mother board.
6) I'll be using Adobe Premiere Pro (not the version 1.5 nor 2.0).

I'm planning to buy hardware little by little. First (the next week), I might buy an 512 RAM stick (or whatever is the name for this part) and replace the 256 RAM I have. Then (the week after), I think of buying more memory for the HD (perhaps 80 GBs). Finally, I think I'll buy a Pentium IV up to 3.0 or higher (two weeks after the previous one). No, I'm not thinking to buy a Pentium Conroe even it's on sale on 'cuz it'll be very expensive (from 4,000 to 8,000 pesos, depending on the GHz, so I might buy it the next year).

The video card I'll be buying four or six months later I would like it to be an nVidia 9200 or 9700 (256 bits), but according to the guy who sold me the computer tells me that this needs an new mother board with PCI-express (or something like that) conection.

My question is, is it ok with the video card I have right now (so the only thing I buy is RAM, a faster processor and more HD space)? or if it's necesary to buy a better video card? I've investigated that the resolution needed for Adobe Premiere Pro is 1280 x 1024 (32 bits) or dual screen.

PD.: If you give me the price you don't need to worry about it, I've already checked it in pesos 'cuz I live in Mexico... I wouldn't stand the price in dollars since it is near 11.00 pesos per dollar.

Though you're asking for the video card I want to give you an advice regarding the HD. 80 GB have a high price per GB. For only twice the price you can get a 250 GB HD.

I'm not much of a hardware wiz, but what I do know that new technologies pop out all the time. make sure you got the right CPU soket in the mobo tor the new CPU. Same goes for new RAM moduls (DDR2 if i remember correctly), SATA compitabilty for the HDDs, and PCI-e for GFX card.

Before asking, THINK!!! Have you read The Guides, consulted The Wiki and watched The Corn?

Before you go out and replacing EVERYTHING, what is it that you want to do with your computer? If you only want to make editing better, you're existing system is actually quite reasonable. If it needed any upgrades for editing, it'd only be hard disk storage and maybe some RAM.

Unless you're into gaming, your video card should be all you need. The best upgrades for the money would be more ram memory, 1gb is enough for most uses, the fastest processor your motherboard can handle, make sure you check the manuals ore the manufacturer to find out what will work, and a larger hard drive, parallel ata is fine and 250gb sell for under 100 bucks so it's the way to go. You should be able to upgrade for around 400 bucks.
Where did you say I'm going?.... And what am I doing in a handbasket?

I'll take in count the RAM and the space in the hard disk (for now), as it is on my budget I'll take my time.

Thanks for the suggestions, good... morning and happy summer vacations :)
