what do you think?

Post by demonblacksky » Mon Apr 10, 2006 12:18 am

Hey iv been checkin out a lot of amv's lately and most of them happen to have hard rock or metal which are in fact my type of music. But the point is that also my friends like it but they try other music as well. So we were talking about it and they sey that rock fits in with amv instead of rap. what do you guys think?

I think its a matter of the song and anime. for instance theres this video

which is 2pac to trigun and its pretty good.

then look at the other end of the spectrum with countless amvs to rammstein (sp?), system of a down and so forth.

frankly you think the amv can be made, then it usually can.

Warning: Generalizations regarding rap songs abound in this post. I only listen to rap songs I like, so I can only speak for the songs I have or have listened to repeatedly.

Lyric sync is a major problem with amvs and rap. Subject matter about gang violence limit the anime that can be used. Very common use of the word niggah and themes of racial tension seems awkward given the very few dark-skinned anime characters amid the almost exclusive caucasion (and rare Asian) character designs. Songs degrading women with themes about hos and pimps and explicit sexual orders are not the sort of thing you match to any anime outside of parodies without offending viewers.

Then you have the repetitive music played behind a lot of rap songs - if you ignore the meaning of the lyrics a lot of the beats in the songs make poor sync for any sort of video, even random action.

For me, it's just a matter of avoiding things that I know will offend my friends. I have some rap songs I'd love to see amvs to, but I'm not bold enough to do it myself. It seems offensive for me to even think about making a video with a song using words that aren't 'allowed' to be said by anyone who isn't African American. I'm white. If I used the word niggah out loud, I'm an automatic racist, so how can I sync something to it in a song? Even in college my black friends got quiet if we were singing a rap song and I had the nerve to say that word along with the singer. And these were my *friends*. If I'd been a guy instead of the token white girl, they'd have done a lot more than send me dirty looks. It's too hard to find rap songs with beats I like that don't use that word. And I've been told repeatedly that Eminem does not count as a rapper, so he's out. ^_^;

Warning: topic has been discussed 100X before on the forums!

if you can make a song work then it works.

Any type of music can fit, it's just a matter of finding the right source (or the wrong source in some cases).

Hell, I've got Rock & Roll Yodeling on my computer I've been meaning to use for about a year now.
